Relive the Harry Potter books and movies by playing the entertaining and fun Wii game, Lego Harry Potter: Years 1-4, in the comfort of your own home! You can learn how to cast spells, unlock characters, play Quidditch, and defeat Professor Quirrell and all of the other evil wizards who work for Lord Voldemort.
Harry Potter has been a big part of our household for many years now, and attending parties for midnight releases of J.K. Rowling’s novels about his adventures has made for lots of great memories for myself and my son and daughter. That’s why I had to check out this Lego version, published by Warner Bros. Interactive and created by Traveller’s Tales, and see if it was as good as the novels and the movies. Guess what? It was, and is a game that any fan of Harry Potter will love to play!
Most of the major plot elements of the movies and novel are included in this Wii game. This makes the game very fun to play, and you can explore every environment you find yourself in, from Hogwarts Castle to Diagon Alley to the Leaky Cauldron hub area, where you can also enter in cheat codes. When you explore, one of the most common and important things you’ll do is blast blocks apart with their spells and tricks. This is so you can collect the silver and gold colored studs that will appear, which you use as money to buy things, new characters, and spells.
You can also explore the levels to find secret blocks, characters, and students in peril. And, don’t worry about dying; you will lose some of your studs, but you will respawn and can continue playing the game almost as if nothing happened. At any point, a second player can join the game with a push of a button and participate in the fun. It’s a game that all ages can enjoy playing. It’s easy enough to start playing and have a good time without consulting any guides or walkthroughs, but it has plenty of secret hidden items to discover and lots of cool cheat codes that will make the game interesting to even the most jaded video game player.
The spell that you’ll probably use the most often, because you start off with it, is Wingardium Leviosa. With it, you can lift items, and your partner can get to high areas that he couldn’t otherwise reach to get out-of-the-way studs or to break objects there to collect studs. To scare attacking plants, the Lumos spell is useful, and Riddikulus does the same thing it does in the novels–makes your worst fears seem silly, or ridiculous.
I don’t want to spoil the fun you’ll have exploring Hogwarts and discovering new items and spells by revealing too many codes, but I will mention a handful that I thought were kind of cool. You enter the codes at Wiseacres Wizarding Equipment in the Leaky Cauldron hub area in Diagon Alley, upstairs. For instance, to get Carrot Wands, you’d enter in AUC8EH; for an Ice Rink effect, the code is F88VUW; for Christmas, it’s T&PVVN; if you want to use the Disguise code, it’s 4DMK2R; and, the code to learn the spell Trip Jinx is YZNRF6. If you want to use a spell to make people have giant-looking heads, you’d enter in CD4JLX for the Engorgio Skullus spell. I’ll just mention one other very useful one, that will save your life if you fall off of a ledge. It’s called the Doomed Recovery Red Brick Extra code: ZEX7MV. That’s enough to give you an idea about the tons of codes you can use in this game, and some of the effects they will produce.
Lego Harry Potter: Years 1-4 is a game that will give you and a friend hours of fun. It’s one of the most highly rated Nintendo Wii games around. If you’re a fan of the Harry Potter novels and movies, and have the Wii console, and would like to explore vast areas and find items and learn spells just like Harry, Hermione, and Ron, then you should definitely check this game out!
