Get ready to return to the Hidden Leaf Village because one of the most beloved anime and manga franchises of all time is taking another major step toward making its live-action debut on the big screen!
For generations of fans, Naruto has become so much more than just another anime series. From its unforgettable characters and action-packed adventures to its stories of friendship, perseverance and finding your place in the world, Masashi Kishimoto’s beloved franchise has continued to resonate with audiences around the globe.
And now, after years of anticipation surrounding its live-action adaptation, the project is officially moving forward!
According to a new report from Deadline, Lionsgate has officially greenlit the upcoming Naruto movie, with Sony Pictures joining the production as a co-financier and international distributor.
The film will be written and directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, whose work includes Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Production is currently expected to begin in spring 2027.
Under the new agreement, Lionsgate will oversee the film’s development and production while handling its domestic theatrical release. Sony will take responsibility for international distribution, bringing together two major studios to introduce the world of Naruto to moviegoers.
And for longtime fans of the franchise, there is another particularly important detail surrounding the upcoming adaptation.
Original creator Masashi Kishimoto is reportedly closely involved with the project, helping bring the world and characters he created to a new medium.
First introduced through Kishimoto’s manga, Naruto follows a young ninja whose dreams of becoming the leader of his village lead him on an extraordinary journey filled with friendships, rivalries and challenges that ultimately shape the person he becomes.
It’s a story that has continued to reach new audiences long after its original debut, with the manga selling more than 250 million copies across over 60 countries and territories. Its anime adaptations have also reached viewers in more than 145 countries and territories, helping establish Naruto as one of the most recognizable Japanese entertainment franchises worldwide.
And while the series has expanded through sequels, films, video games and merchandise, bringing its original story into live action represents an entirely new chapter for the franchise.
The upcoming film will also be produced by Avi Arad, Ari Arad and Emmy Yu of Arad Productions, alongside Cretton and Jeyun Munford of Hisako.
For fans who grew up following Naruto Uzumaki and his friends, the announcement brings the long-awaited adaptation another step closer to becoming a reality. And for a new generation discovering the franchise for the first time, it could offer another introduction to the world of ninjas, hidden villages and the friendships that have made the series so memorable.
With production expected to begin in spring 2027, additional details surrounding the cast, story and theatrical release have yet to be announced.
But one thing is certain: Naruto’s journey to the big screen is officially moving forward!
