For anyone who grew up during the early 2010s, there are certain games and characters that have managed to remain a rather special part of their childhood memories. And for millions of children around the world, one of those experiences was discovering the colorful and rather unusual world of Moshi Monsters.
From adopting and caring for their own monster to exploring Monstro City, collecting Moshlings and discovering all the different personalities that made up the franchise, Moshi Monsters became something of a phenomenon during its original run. And while much of that experience took place online, the franchise also found its way into the real world through toys, books, collectibles and, of course, trading cards.
Now, as Moshi Monsters prepares to introduce its world to an entirely new generation, it looks like one of the most beloved parts of the original franchise is making a comeback.
That’s right, Moshi Monsters trading cards are officially returning!
Mind Candy, the company behind the beloved children’s entertainment franchise, has announced a new partnership with Pocket Realm to develop and distribute an all-new Moshi Monsters trading card game, bringing the characters and world of the franchise back into the collectible card market.
And this time, the cards won’t simply be something for fans to collect.
The upcoming release is being developed as a trading card game, combining the familiar characters, humor and world of Moshi Monsters with new opportunities for fans to play, trade and build their own collections. While the companies have yet to reveal the specific gameplay mechanics or what the new cards will look like, the announcement suggests that the upcoming assortment will be designed to offer a more interactive experience alongside the traditional collecting aspect.
It’s an interesting direction for the franchise, particularly considering just how important trading cards were during the original popularity of Moshi Monsters.
During its initial run, more than 170 million Moshi Monsters trading cards were sold, giving young fans another way to connect with the characters they had come to know through the online game. And with so many different Moshlings and monsters to discover, the cards became another part of the larger collecting experience that helped make the franchise so recognizable.
For those who remember collecting the original cards, the new release could offer an opportunity to revisit a familiar part of their childhood. But for younger audiences discovering Moshi Monsters for the first time, it also creates another way to explore the characters and world beyond a screen.
And with the continued popularity of trading card games and character-based collectibles, the timing of the announcement is particularly interesting.
The new Moshi Monsters trading card game is currently scheduled to make its debut in the United Kingdom in spring 2028, with plans for a wider international release to follow. The partnership between Mind Candy and Pocket Realm will also include physical and digital gift cards, although additional details surrounding those products have not yet been announced.
But the return of trading cards is only one part of a much larger plan for the franchise.
Mind Candy is currently preparing a major relaunch of Moshi Monsters, which will include a new online game, an animated television series, YouTube content, music and a growing collection of consumer products.
And considering how closely the original franchise connected its digital world with real-world collecting, bringing trading cards back into the mix feels like a natural addition to those plans.
What makes Moshi Monsters particularly well suited for a return like this is the sheer number of characters and personalities that have always been at the heart of the franchise. Between the different monsters and the enormous variety of Moshlings, there is already an established world filled with characters for fans to discover, collect and develop favorites around.
The question now is how Pocket Realm will build upon that foundation and what the new trading card game will introduce that makes it feel both familiar to longtime fans and accessible to children experiencing Moshi Monsters for the first time.
With the first release still more than a year away, there is plenty of time for additional details to be revealed.
For now, Moshi Monsters fans can look forward to the return of trading cards in spring 2028, marking another step in the franchise’s efforts to bring Monstro City and its colorful residents back to a new generation!
