There is something particularly special about the holiday season when you’re a child. From the excitement of decorating for Christmas to the anticipation of Father Christmas making his annual visit, it’s a time of year when even the simplest things can become something extraordinary. And while the traditions and celebrations surrounding the holidays might look a little different from one family to another, the stories that we share during this time of year have become an important part of how generations of children experience the magic of Christmas.
And now, a new animated series is preparing to introduce some of the youngest audiences to a world where that magic is part of everyday life.
That’s right, we’re heading to Lapland!
Lapland Studios is bringing its all-new preschool animated series, Lumo the Lapland Reindeer, to Netflix in the United Kingdom and Ireland on November 1, introducing young viewers to a curious little reindeer with some rather big dreams.
Set within the imaginative world of Father Christmas’s Lapland, the new 3D animated series follows Lumo, a young reindeer who hopes that one day he will have the opportunity to become part of Father Christmas’s famous sleigh team.
But while that might be his biggest dream, there are plenty of smaller adventures waiting for him along the way.
Joined by his friends Rollo the bear, Kea the Arctic fox and Chichu the penguin, Lumo spends his days exploring the world around him, discovering new places and learning about the characters and traditions that make Lapland such a special place.
And as you might imagine, things don’t always go exactly according to plan.
Throughout the series, Lumo and his friends find themselves facing little problems and unexpected situations that require them to work together, think creatively and discover their own solutions. Each adventure begins with a moment of curiosity or a simple challenge, eventually leading to a series of playful complications before the friends find a way to work through everything together.
It’s a familiar approach to preschool storytelling, but one that feels particularly well suited to a world built around imagination, friendship and the excitement of discovering something new.
The first collection of Lumo the Lapland Reindeer will feature five 13-minute episodes, with stories designed specifically for children under the age of five.
But while Lumo might be a new character for audiences discovering the series on Netflix, the world he comes from has actually been growing for nearly two decades.
The series is an extension of LaplandUK, an immersive Christmas experience founded by Michael and Alison Battle in 2007. Created around the idea of bringing the world of Father Christmas to life for young children and their families, LaplandUK has welcomed more than two million visitors since its introduction, allowing guests to explore its characters, locations and traditions for themselves.
And now, the team behind that experience is looking to bring the same imaginative world to audiences who might never have the opportunity to visit in person.
Founded in 2024, Lapland Studios was established to expand the world of Lapland through storytelling, with Lumo the Lapland Reindeer serving as the first chapter in a much larger creative vision.
It’s an interesting direction for a property that began as a physical experience rather than a traditional television or book franchise.
Over the past several years, we have seen more entertainment brands explore ways to bring their fictional worlds into real-life settings, creating immersive destinations where families can interact with characters and stories beyond the screen.
But Lumo the Lapland Reindeer is approaching that relationship from the opposite direction.
Instead of taking an established animated series and turning it into an attraction, Lapland Studios is taking a world that families have already been able to physically experience and expanding it into an animated storytelling universe.
And there is certainly room to explore that idea, particularly when it comes to Christmas.
While holiday programming has long been an important part of children’s entertainment, many Christmas stories tend to focus on the same familiar moments, whether it’s preparing for the big day, helping Father Christmas or learning about the importance of giving.
With Lumo, there is an opportunity to explore what life might actually look like within that magical world beyond the events of Christmas Eve, introducing young audiences to the characters, friendships and everyday adventures that could exist throughout Lapland.
And for preschoolers, having a young character like Lumo at the center of those stories provides someone they can grow alongside as he learns more about the world around him.
Helping bring that vision to life is a creative team with plenty of experience in children’s entertainment.
The series is led by creative producer and head writer Melissa Czaja, whose previous credits include Teletubbies Let’s Go, Tiddlytubbies, Caillou’s New Adventures and Strawberry Shortcake.
Joining her on the writing team are Jo Clegg (Hey Duggee), Zahara Andrews (Moominvalley, Stan and Gran), Roxana Altamirano (Dora, The Creature Cases) and Joe Stone.
And there are also some familiar voices helping introduce audiences to the world of Lapland.
Teresa Gallagher, whose credits include Numberblocks, Noddy in Toyland and Thomas and Friends, voices Lumo and Dasher. Penny Rawlins provides the voices of Kea, Rollo and Wish the elf, while Jo Ruiz voices Chichu and Kloppi.
Rob Rackstraw, known for his work on Bob the Builder and Thomas and Friends, rounds out the announced cast as Comet and Father Christmas.
Recording, casting, music scoring and sound design are handled by Score Draw Music.
With the series arriving just as families begin preparing for the holiday season, Lumo the Lapland Reindeer offers younger viewers another opportunity to explore the magic of Christmas through a collection of adventures centered around friendship, curiosity and learning to work together.
And while Lumo might still have quite a way to go before he achieves his dream of joining Father Christmas’s sleigh team, it looks like he and his friends will have plenty of adventures to experience before that day arrives.
Lumo the Lapland Reindeer premieres November 1, 2026, on Netflix in the United Kingdom and Ireland, with five 13-minute episodes available for preschool audiences.
And for families looking for something new to enjoy as the holiday season approaches, it might just be time to take a little trip to Lapland!
