Mix music, reality television and a powerhouse toy brand together, and what do you get?
Something unique and heartfelt, filled with humor and a killer soundtrack to match.
Since its debut, MGA Entertainment’s L.O.L. Surprise! has shaken up the norm, making bold creative choices that have helped shape the toy world, inspire fans globally and leave a lasting impact on the industry. That boldness has carried over from the toys into the franchise’s entertainment, with an expansive catalog of original content built around its various collections. And really, that willingness to do things a little differently shouldn’t come as much of a surprise. After all, MGA is the same company that created the bold older sister that is Bratz.
And what could be more bold, or perhaps more culturally relevant, than reality television?
While reality television has been a mainstay of entertainment since the early 2000s, it isn’t often used to tell a fully developed fictional story within the kids and family landscape. That makes it the perfect recipe for a unique spin on the origin story of a girl group.
L.O.L. Surprise! The Next Headliner follows five talented teens selected for an in-universe reality competition that promises to turn one lucky winner into the next big thing, complete with their own album and a tour alongside superstar Diva Geneva. The five hopefuls come from very different places and are immediately positioned as rivals, giving their reality show the perfect opportunity for a little extra drama.
Yet as they spend more time together, the girls grow closer and make a bold decision: without even knowing who the judges selected, they reject the idea of a single winner and choose to form a group instead. While Diva Geneva’s right-hand manager, Roberto, quickly shoots the idea down, everyone else, from Technique and Stella P to Diva Geneva herself, embraces it.
The first episode establishes not only the formation of the group, but also its main point of conflict: Roberto. Determined to produce a single star as originally agreed, he begins sabotaging the girls in hopes of breaking them apart.
From there, the series follows the girls, still being filmed for their reality show, as they work toward becoming a real girl group they later name Eclipse. Between filming music videos, writing and recording songs and defining their individual styles, they’re determined to prove they’re ready to shine as the opening act on Diva Geneva’s upcoming tour.
Each episode also incorporates a track from the group’s newly released soundtrack, connected to the characters and themes of that installment. Whether performed onstage, woven into training sequences or presented through those very 2000s-style music video transitions, the music becomes a natural part of the girls’ journey toward finding their sound.
With help from Ryder, a jack-of-all-trades working behind the scenes, the girls unknowingly overcome many of Roberto’s challenges. But the drama isn’t limited to whatever Roberto may or may not be orchestrating. Oftentimes, the conflict comes from the girls themselves.
Just not as one might expect.
Although everything the girls experience is happening under the guise of a reality show, they aren’t rivals constantly looking for opportunities to bring one another down. They don’t act mean or petty simply because they can, or because they believe it’s the role they’re expected to play. Instead, they’re incredibly authentic with one another, acting much like a real budding group of friends would. They’re honest, willing to admit when they’re jealous or frustrated, and able to work through those emotions while continuing to support one another.
This truly comes to light when Violet Angel is dumped by her boyfriend back home, or when K-Crush’s stage fright threatens one of their performances. Rather than turning against one another, the girls stand together and move forward as one. Even when they eventually learn who the competition’s original winner was supposed to be, it doesn’t change the group. Sure, they’re disappointed it wasn’t them, and some admit they might have been a little envious, but they move past it.
Because by that point, they want to stand onstage together, not alone.
And while the show is filled with all the classic tropes of reality television, complete with diary-style confessionals and plenty of behind-the-scenes drama, it remains fully committed to the bit without feeling like a stereotypical reality show simply looking for its next viral moment. You genuinely root for these characters and want to see them succeed.
That’s why, when Roberto finally takes control and brings in a new group of would-be stars to replace Eclipse, it feels like such a strong and painful rejection from the viewer’s perspective. We’ve watched these girls work toward their dream and build something special together, only to have it all threatened. And that disappointment isn’t limited to Eclipse; everyone from Diva Geneva to Stella P and Technique struggles with the decision.
But we also see the girls’ firm resolve to do whatever it takes to keep Eclipse from being torn apart, even if that means putting together an over-the-top plan to convince the head of the label that they deserve to keep going over the newly selected girls.
That leads to a do-or-die finale for Eclipse. And after following the girls throughout their journey, it’s a high-intensity conclusion as we wait to see whether they can keep their dream alive.
It works so well because there is a genuine connection and sense of care built around Eclipse. From their growing bond with one another to the humor that comes naturally from their interactions, it’s easy to develop an attachment to each member. Add in their unique personalities and individual musical styles, and we have a wonderfully diverse group of girls who are great on their own, but even better together. All of it centers back on the core themes of sisterhood and girl power as they strive to make their dreams a reality.
And in doing so, the series sends a great message to kids and tweens about the importance of not losing yourself or the connections you’ve made while boldly moving toward your goals.
Though, admittedly, not many of us are quite so poised to become the next batch of reality stars.
While the episodes are very fast-paced, the storytelling remains compact, keeping the central aspects of the girls’ journey front and center. There are certainly moments where a little more time to explore the characters and their relationships would have been welcome, particularly Roberto and his dynamic with Diva Geneva. Understanding more about their history and what drives Roberto’s determination to stick to the original agreement could have added another layer to the conflict.
Still, the series accomplishes what it sets out to do, establishing Eclipse and giving audiences a reason to care about the girls and their future together.
Through its combination of music, humor, reality television antics and a heartfelt story about friendship, L.O.L. Surprise! The Next Headliner gives Eclipse a strong foundation while introducing a group of characters with plenty of room to grow. The only question left is what comes next for the girls after the final episode.
Perhaps that’s something MGA Entertainment will expand on in the future.
Until then, be sure to catch L.O.L. Surprise! The Next Headliner on YouTube and stream the official soundtrack now!
