“The Baby-Sitters Club” Is Reuniting! Beloved Book Series Heads to the Stage With a New Musical in 2027!

There are some stories that become so much more than the pages of the books in which they first appeared. Stories that introduce us to characters who feel like friends, inspire us to discover a little more about ourselves and remain with us long after we’ve turned the final page. And for generations of young readers, few literary friendships have been quite as memorable as those shared by the girls of The Baby-Sitters Club.

From navigating the challenges of growing up to learning the importance of friendship, responsibility and finding their own voices, the adventures of Kristy, Mary Anne, Claudia, Stacey and their friends have been a beloved part of childhood for decades. And while their stories have found new life through television and film adaptations over the years, it seems that their next chapter is preparing to take them somewhere entirely new.

That’s right! The Baby-Sitters Club is officially heading to the stage, and this time, the girls are all grown up!

The upcoming production, titled The Baby-sitters Club: A New Musical, is set to make its world premiere at the Kirk Douglas Theatre in Los Angeles in spring 2027. Presented with Center Theatre Group, the musical will begin previews on May 6 before officially opening on May 16 for a four-week engagement.

But rather than simply retelling one of the familiar adventures from Ann M. Martin’s beloved books, the production is taking a rather interesting approach to the franchise by exploring what happens when childhood friends find themselves navigating an entirely different chapter of their lives.

Set years after the events of the original stories, the musical reunites Kristy, Mary Anne, Claudia and Stacey at the age of 25 as they return to Stoneybrook for a long-overdue reunion. However, as the friends reconnect and revisit the memories that helped shape their childhoods, they also find themselves confronting the realities of adulthood, including questions about their futures, the paths they’ve chosen and whether their lives have turned out quite as they once imagined.

It’s an intriguing direction for a franchise that has always placed friendship and personal growth at the center of its storytelling. After all, while the original books explored the experiences of young girls learning to navigate the world around them, this new production offers an opportunity to revisit those same characters through the perspective of adulthood.

And for readers who grew up alongside the original Baby-Sitters Club, the idea of returning to Stoneybrook with the girls as adults carries a particularly meaningful sense of nostalgia.

The creative team behind the production includes Kate Wetherhead, who is writing the musical’s book, with music and lyrics from Mark Sonnenblick, whose credits include Netflix’s KPop Demon Hunters. Annie Tippe will direct and choreograph the production, bringing the beloved literary world to life through a new theatrical interpretation.

Another familiar name helping bring the project to the stage is Academy Award-winning actress Natalie Portman, whose production company Mountain A, co-founded with Sophie Mas, is among the producers. Portman has shared her personal connection to both The Baby-Sitters Club and musical theater, making the upcoming adaptation a particularly meaningful project for the actress.

Of course, the arrival of a new musical also comes at an especially fitting moment in the history of the franchise.

Originally published by Scholastic in 1986, The Baby-Sitters Club is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, marking four decades since readers were first introduced to the adventures of the young entrepreneurs of Stoneybrook. What began as a planned collection of just four books eventually grew into a publishing phenomenon, expanding to more than 250 titles and four spin-off series, with over 200 million books in print worldwide.

And the franchise’s influence certainly hasn’t been limited to the literary world.

Over the years, The Baby-Sitters Club has inspired multiple screen adaptations, including a 1990 television series, a 1995 feature film and Netflix’s acclaimed 2020 series, which introduced the characters and their friendships to another generation of viewers.

Now, with the upcoming musical, the franchise is preparing to explore a side of these familiar characters that audiences haven’t previously experienced in quite the same way.

What makes this new adaptation especially compelling is the opportunity to examine how the friendships we form during childhood can continue to influence us as we grow older. While our ambitions, responsibilities and understanding of the world may change, the people who helped shape those early years can remain an important part of our stories.

And for a franchise built around the idea of young girls supporting one another through life’s challenges, exploring that same bond in adulthood feels like a natural continuation of the themes that made the original books so meaningful.

Casting for The Baby-sitters Club: A New Musical is expected to begin soon, with The Telsey Office overseeing casting in New York and Henry Russell Bergstein Casting handling Los Angeles.

The production will begin previews at the Kirk Douglas Theatre on May 6, 2027, ahead of its official opening on May 16.

So, whether you grew up reading the original adventures, discovered the girls through one of their television adaptations or simply have fond memories of visiting Stoneybrook through the pages of a book, it looks like The Baby-Sitters Club is preparing to welcome us back for a reunion many longtime fans never expected.

Because while growing up may change a great many things, some friendships are simply too special to leave behind.
