From extraordinary magical worlds to unlikely heroes finding themselves in the middle of adventures far bigger than they ever imagined, fantasy stories have always held a rather special place in entertainment. And with comic books continuing to inspire some of Hollywood’s most ambitious projects, it looks like another imaginative world is preparing to make the leap from the page to the big screen!
Sony Pictures has officially acquired the live-action film rights to D’Orc, the bestselling fantasy comic book series created by author and illustrator Brett Bean.
Published by Image Comics, D’Orc made its debut earlier this year, quickly becoming a breakout success among comic book readers. In fact, the series’ first issue sold out before it was even released and has since reached its eighth printing, with subsequent installments also receiving multiple printings.
And now, its growing popularity has caught the attention of Hollywood.
While details surrounding the upcoming film’s storyline remain under wraps, the original comic blends swashbuckling humor, magical mythology and an assortment of fantastical creatures into an action-filled adventure. It’s a combination that offers plenty of possibilities for bringing the imaginative world of D’Orc into live action.
Perhaps one of the most interesting aspects of the announcement is that Brett Bean himself will be adapting his creation for the screen, allowing the original storyteller to play a direct role in bringing the characters and world he created into an entirely different medium.
For those familiar with Bean’s work, D’Orc is only one of several projects in his growing creative portfolio. He is also the creator of the graphic novel series Zoo Patrol Squad and the Muk ‘n’ Honey books, while his illustration work includes contributions to Marvel’s Rocket and Groot, the Dungeon Crawler Carl comic series and puppet designs for Jim Henson’s Creature Shop.
With the project still in its early stages, Sony Pictures has yet to announce a director, cast or potential release date.
But considering the remarkable reception D’Orc has already received since its debut, it will certainly be interesting to see how this fantastical comic book adventure makes its way onto the big screen.
