There are some movies that, no matter how many years pass, remain an essential part of celebrating the Halloween season. Films that generations of families have grown up watching, returning to their familiar characters and magical worlds year after year as October rolls around. And for those who grew up during the golden era of Disney Channel Original Movies, there is one franchise that has become something of a Halloween tradition.
Halloweentown.
And it looks like we might finally be returning to the magical town after all these years!
Disney is reportedly in the early stages of developing a fifth installment in the Halloweentown film series, potentially bringing one of Disney Channel’s most recognizable Halloween franchises back to screens for an entirely new adventure.
Originally premiering in 1998, Halloweentown introduced audiences to Marnie Piper, a young girl who discovers that her family has a rather extraordinary magical heritage. Alongside her siblings and grandmother Aggie, Marnie finds herself entering a world where witches, monsters and all sorts of supernatural creatures are part of everyday life.
The original film would go on to inspire three sequels, with Return to Halloweentown arriving in 2006, marking the last time audiences visited the magical world in a new film.
Now, two decades later, Disney is exploring the possibility of continuing the story.
The upcoming project is being written by Lily Houghton and Ryan Koehn, drawing upon the characters originally created by Paul Bernbaum, who penned the first film. While the new installment remains in early development, details surrounding its storyline and potential cast have yet to be announced.
And perhaps one of the biggest questions longtime fans will have is whether any of the original characters will be making their return.
Although several cast members have previously expressed interest in revisiting the franchise, no casting decisions have been confirmed, meaning we’ll have to wait a little longer to discover what Disney has planned.
Should the project receive an official green light, the fifth Halloweentown film is expected to premiere on Disney Channel and Disney+.
For a franchise that has remained a favorite among families for nearly three decades, the possibility of returning to Halloweentown is certainly an exciting development, especially for those who have continued to revisit the original adventures every Halloween.
And with the project only beginning to take shape, there are still plenty of questions surrounding what this newest chapter could mean for Marnie and the magical world that generations of Disney fans have come to love.
