For generations, some of the most recognizable names in the world of toys have been helping children create countless stories and adventures of their own. From imaginative characters to classic games that have become part of childhood for decades, there are some toys that continue to find new ways to connect with audiences long after their original debut.
And now, two familiar names from Mattel’s extensive toy collection are preparing to embark on some rather different adventures as they make their way into the world of children’s literature!
In celebration of National Book Month, Mattel Press has announced two upcoming book series inspired by the classic Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots and Chatty Cathy brands, bringing new stories to young readers beginning in summer 2027.
First up, get ready to step into the ring with the Blue Bomber and Red Rocker!
Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots: We’re Gonna Need a Bigger Bot is an all-new graphic novel from author Dustin Brady and illustrator Dave Bardin, reimagining the familiar boxing robots in a story that takes their legendary rivalry beyond the tabletop game.
This time, the Blue Bomber and Red Rocker are creations of two competing inventors who are determined to take control of a city known as Downs Town. And with two rival robots at the center of the story, readers can expect a new take on the classic competition that has entertained families for generations.
Designed for readers ages five through eight, the first graphic novel is scheduled to arrive in summer 2027, with a second installment already planned for spring 2028.
But the robots aren’t the only familiar Mattel characters getting a new literary adventure!
The classic Chatty Cathy doll is also making her way into the world of children’s books with Chatty Cathy and Planet Silent, an illustrated chapter book written and illustrated by Rebecca Elliott, the creator behind the popular Owl Diaries and Unicorn Diaries series.
The story follows Chatty Cathy as she discovers a mysterious red button that unexpectedly transports her and her friends Benjamin Pinkles and Mr. Bulky to a place known as Planet Silent.
Just what kind of adventure awaits a character known for talking when she finds herself on a planet where silence is part of the name?
Young readers will get to discover that for themselves when the first book arrives in summer 2027.
And there are already more adventures on the way, with a second Chatty Cathy book scheduled for October 2027 and a third planned for spring 2028.
Both upcoming series are available for pre-order, giving families and young readers an early opportunity to look forward to these new stories.
With classic toys finding new life through graphic novels and illustrated chapter books, Mattel Press is opening another door for a new generation of children to discover some of the familiar characters and brands that have been part of childhood for decades.
