There are some collaborations that are surprising.
And then there are the ones that make you stop and wonder how they haven’t already happened.
Hello Kitty is becoming LEGO.
The LEGO Group and Sanrio have announced a new multi-year partnership that will bring Hello Kitty and Friends into the world of LEGO bricks for the very first time, with a wide range of new products set to begin arriving in 2027.
Yes. Somehow, after all these years, this really is the first time.
The partnership will transform Sanrio’s colorful universe into LEGO play sets, with Hello Kitty already confirmed to be at the center of the collection alongside other fan-favorite characters.
Exactly which friends will be joining her hasn’t been revealed just yet, nor do we know what the first sets will actually look like. But with LEGO and Sanrio describing this as a multi-year collaboration and already promising a wide range of products, it certainly sounds like there will be plenty to build.
And really, Sanrio feels almost made for LEGO.
These are characters whose worlds have long extended beyond what we simply watch on a screen. Hello Kitty and Friends have become part of fashion, toys, accessories, collectibles and countless other pieces of everyday life, with designs that appeal to kids discovering the characters now and adults who have loved them for years.
LEGO has that same ability to cross generations.
Put the two together, and there is quite a lot of room to play.
“We’re thrilled to reveal this partnership with Sanrio and introduce the Hello Kitty and Friends characters and universe to fans in LEGO play sets for the very first time,” said Lena Dixen, senior vice president, global product groups at the LEGO Group, pointing to Hello Kitty’s appeal across generations and the creative possibilities of LEGO play.
Sanrio Senior Managing Director Wataru Nakatsuka similarly described the collaboration as a chance to reimagine its characters through LEGO while continuing Sanrio’s focus on happiness, friendship and connection.
For now, however, both companies are keeping the actual bricks tucked safely inside the box.
We don’t have set names. We don’t have prices. We don’t have a complete character lineup. And we don’t have our first look at what LEGO Hello Kitty herself will look like.
That leaves us with plenty to wonder about before 2027.
What does Hello Kitty’s world look like rebuilt one brick at a time? Which of her friends will make the first wave? And just how dangerous is this partnership going to be for the shelf space of Sanrio collectors?
We’ll find out soon enough.
The first LEGO Sanrio products featuring Hello Kitty and Friends are scheduled to arrive in 2027, beginning a new multi-year partnership between the two brands.
Hello Kitty has been a lot of things over the years.
Now we can finally add LEGO builder to the list.
