The countdown to our return to Hogwarts is continuing, and with the premiere of HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter television series drawing closer, more familiar faces from the beloved wizarding world are preparing to make their way onto the screen.
And this time, the newest casting announcement is bringing some rather important members of Harry Potter’s family into the story, alongside a character that fans of the original books have been waiting years to see brought to life.
HBO has officially announced that Harry Gilby, Jasper Talbot and Hannah Chinn have joined the cast of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, the first season of the upcoming television adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s bestselling fantasy series.
Gilby will take on the role of Charlie Weasley, while Talbot and Chinn will portray James and Lily Potter, Harry’s parents, whose story plays an important role in the events that ultimately lead their son into the magical world of Hogwarts.
And while James and Lily have previously appeared throughout the original Harry Potter films through photographs, memories and magical appearances, Charlie Weasley’s inclusion marks something of a milestone for the franchise.
Despite being one of Ron Weasley’s older brothers and a familiar name to readers of the original novels, Charlie never received an on-screen appearance in the eight-film series. Now, with HBO’s upcoming adaptation, the character will finally have an opportunity to make his screen debut.
It’s also another interesting indication of how the new television series may explore parts of the original books that were previously left out of the theatrical adaptations.
The upcoming first season will introduce audiences to a young Harry Potter, played by Dominic McLaughlin, whose ordinary life with the Dursley family is turned upside down when a mysterious letter arrives inviting him to attend Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
There, Harry will discover an entirely new world filled with magic, friendship and adventure, alongside Hermione Granger, played by Arabella Stanton, and Ron Weasley, portrayed by Alastair Stout. But as Harry begins uncovering the truth about his past, he’ll also find himself facing a dangerous mystery connected to one of the darkest wizards in history.
The series will also feature John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape and Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid, among an extensive cast bringing the familiar characters of Hogwarts to life for a new generation.
And work is already underway on the next chapter of the story.
The second season, based on Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, is currently filming at Leavesden Studios outside London, with additional cast members including Kit Harington as Gilderoy Lockhart, Lenny Rush as Dobby and Billy Barratt as Tom Riddle.
With the television format providing more room to explore the characters, relationships and events from the original novels, the inclusion of Charlie Weasley is certainly an exciting development for longtime readers who have been hoping to see more of the wizarding world brought to life.
Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone is scheduled to premiere on HBO on December 25, 2026, bringing audiences back to Hogwarts just in time for Christmas.
