There are some rather extraordinary adventures waiting to be discovered in the most unexpected of places. Sometimes, they begin in faraway kingdoms filled with magic and mystery. Other times, they might be waiting just beyond our own backyards, hidden away from the world and quietly unfolding without anyone ever knowing. And for those who remember the animated family film Gnome Alone, we already know that even the smallest of garden decorations can be hiding some rather extraordinary secrets.
Now, nearly a decade after the original film introduced audiences to a world of magical gnomes, dangerous creatures and unexpected friendships, it looks like another adventure is on the horizon. Only this time, the stakes are getting a little bigger, and the journey is taking our familiar heroes somewhere entirely new.
Gnome Alone is officially getting a sequel!
SC Films International has begun production on Gnome Alone: Game of Gnomes, a new animated family feature that will reunite audiences with Chloe, Liam and their rather unusual collection of gnome companions. Peter Lepeniotis, who directed the original 2017 film and is also known for The Nut Job, is returning to write and direct the upcoming sequel.
And if you thought protecting the world from the Troggs was challenging enough the first time around, just wait until you hear what comes next.
In Gnome Alone: Game of Gnomes, Chloe and Liam find themselves traveling back through time on a mission to save mankind from warring families and the dreaded Troggs. Thankfully, they won’t be facing this new adventure alone, as their gnome allies Quicksilver, Zook and Zamfeer will be joining them along the way. With the fate of humanity hanging in the balance, the unlikely heroes will have to navigate an entirely different period in history while confronting familiar threats and discovering what it takes to protect the world once again.
For those who might need a little refresher, the original Gnome Alone followed Chloe as she discovered that the seemingly ordinary garden gnomes surrounding her new home were anything but decorative. Instead, they were part of a secret world locked in an ongoing battle against dangerous creatures known as Troggs. What began as an unexpected discovery soon became an adventure filled with action, humor and the importance of friendship, introducing audiences to a magical conflict hiding in plain sight.
The upcoming sequel looks to expand that world considerably, taking the characters beyond the familiar surroundings of the first film and into a story involving time travel. It’s an interesting direction for the franchise, especially considering how much fun can come from placing familiar characters in completely unfamiliar situations. And with Chloe, Liam and their gnome companions now facing a threat that reaches beyond their own time, there’s certainly plenty of room for new discoveries, unexpected challenges and a little gnome-sized mischief.
Behind the scenes, Gnome Alone: Game of Gnomes also marks the beginning of a new multi-picture, multi-year partnership between SC Films International, SiXiTZ Studios and Magieva. Animation production is being handled by SiXiTZ Studios, with work taking place across California and Toronto. The studio is utilizing animation workflows and technologies developed in collaboration with Magieva, while the production team includes Simon Crowe, Matthew Joynes, Lepeniotis, Kevin Hicks, Nathaniel Hunter and Euan Macdonald.
The sequel is also preparing to make its way onto the international market, with SC Films International set to introduce the project to worldwide buyers during the American Film Market in November. The original Gnome Alone received a theatrical release internationally before arriving on Netflix in North America, giving the franchise an opportunity to reach families through both theaters and streaming.
While an official release date and distribution plans for Gnome Alone: Game of Gnomes have yet to be announced, it’s exciting to see another animated family adventure finding its way back into production after so many years. Particularly one that revisits a world where magic, friendship and a little imagination can transform something as ordinary as a garden gnome into an unexpected hero.
And with Chloe and her friends preparing to travel through time, it seems their next adventure might be their biggest yet.
We’ll be keeping an eye out for more news on Gnome Alone: Game of Gnomes as production continues. After all, who knows what kinds of trouble a few determined gnomes might get into when the past, present and future are all part of the adventure?
