There is something magical about finding a story you love.
Maybe it’s one you’ve watched countless times, a world you’ve only recently discovered or something that has been sitting on your watch list waiting for the perfect family movie night.
And soon, Netflix families are going to have considerably more Disney magic to choose from.
Disney Entertainment and Netflix have entered into an expansive new licensing agreement that will bring a collection of Disney-owned movies and series to Netflix over the coming months. While the larger deal stretches across plenty of genres and audiences, there is an especially exciting lineup waiting for kids and families with “Percy Jackson and the Olympians,” all five “Ice Age” movies and films from Walt Disney Animation Studios and Pixar among the titles making the jump.
And some of them are arriving very soon.
Beginning October 4, Netflix subscribers around the world will be able to stream Seasons 1 and 2 of Disney+’s “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” for a special three-month window.
For families who haven’t yet made the trip to Camp Half-Blood, this is quite the opportunity to catch up.
The limited Netflix run arrives ahead of “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” Season 3, which will premiere November 20 on Disney+. That gives a much larger global audience the chance to meet Percy, Annabeth, Grover and the rest of the demigods before their next adventure begins.
But demigods aren’t the only familiar faces migrating over to Netflix on October 4.
Scrat, Manny, Sid, Diego and the rest of the “Ice Age” crew are coming too.
All five theatrical “Ice Age” films will become available worldwide on Netflix for their own three-month promotional window. That means families can revisit 2002’s “Ice Age,” “Ice Age: The Meltdown,” “Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs,” “Ice Age: Continental Drift” and “Ice Age: Collision Course” all in one place.
And there is a pretty good reason to start planning an “Ice Age” marathon.
The herd will return to theaters on February 5, 2027 with the sixth installment, “Ice Age: Boiling Point.” Bringing the previous five adventures to Netflix gives longtime fans an easy way to revisit the franchise while potentially introducing an entirely new generation of kids to the characters before their next big-screen adventure.
The family additions aren’t stopping there.
Beginning in early 2027, a selection of movies from Walt Disney Animation Studios and Pixar will also become available on Netflix globally, although exact titles and launch dates will vary depending on region.
Among those already confirmed are Pixar’s Oscar-winning “Soul” and “Elio,” alongside Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Raya and the Last Dragon.”
That is a particularly interesting mix of stories to place in front of Netflix’s enormous worldwide audience. Whether it’s Joe Gardner discovering what makes a life worth living in “Soul,” Elio finding somewhere he finally feels like he belongs or Raya journeying across Kumandra, these are films built around very different characters and worlds but connected by the kind of emotional storytelling families have come to expect from Disney and Pixar.
More importantly, their arrival on Netflix doesn’t mean they’re packing their bags and leaving Disney behind.
Titles currently available through Disney+ and Hulu will remain there, including “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” and the “Ice Age” movies. Instead, the agreement creates another doorway for audiences to find them.
And that doorway happens to be a rather large one.
Netflix reaches more than 325 million subscribers, giving these stories the opportunity to appear in front of families who might not otherwise have encountered them. For Disney, that also means introducing viewers to franchises shortly before major new installments arrive on Disney+ or in theaters.
There are plenty of other titles included in the wider agreement for older audiences as well. “Will Trent,” “Shifting Gears” and “Tracker” are heading to Netflix under varying regional agreements, while library series including “Felicity,” “Revenge,” “Army Wives,” “Fresh Off the Boat” and “This Is Us” will also become available in different territories.
But for families, October 4 is where the fun really starts.
Two seasons of “Percy Jackson and the Olympians.”
Five “Ice Age” adventures.
And in 2027, even more Disney and Pixar stories including “Soul,” “Elio” and “Raya and the Last Dragon.”
Streaming services may compete for our attention, but sometimes that competition also means beloved stories get another opportunity to find the people who might love them.
So whether your next adventure takes you to Camp Half-Blood, across the frozen prehistoric world with Manny and the herd, into the Communiverse with Elio or all the way to Kumandra, Netflix is about to have a little more Disney magic waiting on the other side of the play button.
