Cinderella’s Stepsisters Are Rewriting the Fairy Tale! Netflix Unveils New Trailer for Animated Film “Steps”!

There are some stories that, no matter how many times they’re retold, continue to capture the imaginations of audiences across generations. From their enchanting worlds and unforgettable characters to the timeless lessons woven throughout their narratives, fairy tales have remained an important part of children’s storytelling for centuries. And while we have certainly seen countless interpretations of these beloved classics, there’s something particularly interesting about the stories that dare to explore a familiar tale from an entirely different perspective.

After all, every great fairy tale has more than one character whose story deserves to be told.

And when it comes to the beloved story of Cinderella, there are certainly a few familiar faces whose side of the tale hasn’t always received the most flattering portrayal.

Now, Netflix Animation is preparing to revisit the classic fairy tale in a rather unexpected way, placing two of its most notorious supporting characters at the center of an entirely new adventure!

Netflix has officially unveiled the trailer for Steps, an upcoming original animated feature that reimagines the story of Cinderella through the eyes of her stepsisters. And judging by the newly released footage, audiences are in for an adventure filled with magical mishaps, extraordinary creatures, unexpected alliances and a rather unconventional approach to happily ever after.

Arriving on Netflix November 20, 2026, Steps introduces audiences to Lilith and Margot, two sisters who have grown tired of living in Cinderella’s shadow. But when Lilith decides to take matters into her own hands by stealing the Fairy Godmother’s magical wand, her attempt to change the course of the story creates consequences far greater than she could have imagined.

With the Royal Ball thrown into chaos and the familiar fairy tale completely disrupted, the kingdom suddenly finds itself under the control of Priscilla, a scheming new villain who seizes the opportunity to claim the throne.

And naturally, fixing this magical disaster is going to require a rather unlikely partnership.

Forced to work alongside Cinderella herself, Lilith embarks on an extraordinary quest to save the kingdom, encountering everything from biker trolls and dangerous henchmen to the mysterious Screaming Woods. But beyond the magical dangers and fantastical adventures, the story also places an emphasis on the complicated relationship between Cinderella and her stepsister, exploring whether two characters traditionally positioned on opposite sides of a fairy tale might be capable of finding some common ground.

It’s a particularly interesting direction for a story that audiences have known for generations.

While Cinderella has long been celebrated as one of the most recognizable heroines in fairy-tale history, her stepsisters have traditionally served as antagonists whose personalities and actions help establish the challenges she must overcome. By shifting the perspective to these characters, Steps introduces an opportunity to explore the familiar narrative through a different lens, questioning the roles that have defined its characters for so long.

And with the continued popularity of fairy-tale reinterpretations, particularly those that explore the motivations and relationships of traditionally villainous characters, the film feels like a fitting addition to this evolving corner of animated storytelling.

Of course, a story filled with magical mishaps and larger-than-life personalities calls for an equally impressive voice cast.

Ali Wong leads the film as Lilith, alongside Stephanie Hsu as Margot and Amanda Seyfried as Cinderella. The cast also features Bette Midler as the Fairy Godmother and Nikki Glaser as Priscilla, with Daniel Radcliffe lending his voice to the Prince.

Joining them are Young Mazino as Gef, a troll described as rather attractive, Peter Dinklage as the villainous courtier Roderick and WWE Superstar Damian Priest as Cracktor the minotaur.

Behind the scenes, Steps is directed by Alyce Tzue and John Ripa, whose previous credits include the award-winning animated short Soar and Disney’s Raya and the Last Dragon, respectively. The film is produced by Amy Poehler, Jane Hartwell and Kim Lessing, with animation created through Netflix Animation Studios’ teams in Vancouver and Sydney.

And beyond the film’s imaginative take on a familiar fairy tale, Netflix is also preparing an original soundtrack to accompany the adventure.

Releasing alongside the movie on November 20, the soundtrack will feature a new song titled “Someone to Hold” by BLACKPINK’s JENNIE, along with four original songs written and produced by Grammy-nominated songwriter Justin Tranter. Additional vocals will be provided by Amanda Seyfried, Rose Gray and EMEI, with the film’s original score composed by Academy Award winner Kris Bowers.

The combination of an original musical lineup, an ensemble voice cast and a story that challenges the traditional roles of familiar fairy-tale characters certainly makes Steps an interesting addition to Netflix’s growing collection of animated features.

And perhaps what stands out most about the film’s premise is its willingness to revisit a familiar story without simply retelling the events audiences already know.

For generations, Cinderella has been a tale of kindness, perseverance and the possibility of finding happiness despite difficult circumstances. But by shifting the focus toward the stepsisters, Steps appears ready to explore what happens when the characters who have traditionally stood in the background decide they want to take control of their own stories.

And considering that one stolen magical wand is apparently enough to throw an entire kingdom into chaos, it’s safe to say this won’t be the Cinderella story audiences are expecting.

Steps premieres exclusively on Netflix on November 20, 2026, with its original soundtrack arriving the same day.

This time, the glass slipper isn’t the only thing capable of changing someone’s destiny. And for Cinderella’s stepsisters, it looks like their own happily ever after might be a little more complicated than anyone imagined!
