“The Magic Is Backs” Sees New Graphic Novel For The “Winx Club”

It’s the magic of comix.

Over the past twenty-plus years, Winx Club has expanded its storytelling well beyond fans’ screens and into various mediums. From live performances and music to books and, naturally, comics.

Since 2004, Rainbow has regularly released comics continuing the adventures of the six Winx fairies and their magical journeys. While early releases remained closely aligned with the events of the main animated series, the comics quickly began to follow their own looser timeline in a somewhat parallel universe. This led to more mature and complex storylines than those typically seen in the main series, alongside new characters, altered character dynamics, additional settings — and yes, an even larger and more robust collection of fashion.

The comics, while often largely overlooked, offer a slightly more young-adult spin on the Winx series and have proven to be a true gem of a read. One that, thanks to Papercutz, English-speaking fans have been able to enjoy.

Last year, Winx Club underwent an overhaul with its comics to match the changes and shift brought about by the reboot. That meant the already increasingly shorter comics adapted the new style and story core of the reboot, along with moving to a less frequent release cycle.

Once more, these newer comics are focusing on telling readers stories more closely aligned with the events of the reboot’s first season rather than entirely new, side or additional stories. As of the time of writing, these comics have been released and translated in several European countries outside of their native Italian newsstands.

While the reboot, comics and other merchandise associated with The Magic Is Back have continued to expand, much of that impact on the consumer side has yet to reach North American audiences.

That is, until now.

In a newly updated preorder from bookseller Barnes & Noble, the adventures of the Winx will be arriving on our shelves next summer with the first volume of a new graphic novel release.

A sixteen-year-old girl discovers her fire magic may be the key to stopping an ancient evil.

Bloom was just a normal teenage girl, until she was saved from a rampaging monster by magical fairies. It turns out that Bloom isn’t so normal after all. In fact, she’s a fire fairy! Now attending Alfea School for Fairies, Bloom is learning how to control her magic along with her new friends, The Winx. But when evil witches and dark wizards threaten to try to steal her powers, Bloom and her new friends have to uncover the secrets of her past and discover the truth of her mysterious Dragon Flame powers!

Adapted from the hit Netflix animated series, this graphic novel series expands on the world of Winx Club created by Iginio Straffi for a new generation! This YA fantasy series is filled with awe-inspiring magic, amazing adventure, strong friendships, fun fashion, and ultimate battles between good and evil!

Based on the early credits, Trevor Mueller will be leading this new release alongside colorist Debora Grazio and illustrator Riccardo Pieruccini. It has yet to be defined by the publisher whether this will feature English versions of the Italian comics or offer a new spin on the now one-year-old reboot. Given that the targeted release isn’t until next August and the book is currently slated to arrive at eighty pages, those remain some of the only known details.

It’s hard to say for certain what Rainbow and publishing partner Papercutz have planned.

But given that this is the Winx we’re speaking of, it’s safe to say there are countless stories still waiting to be told from the dorms of Alfea.
