“Sesame Street” Is Getting a New Movie as Netflix Expands Its Neighborhood

Can you tell me how to get, how to get to Sesame Street?

Well, these days, one answer is increasingly becoming Netflix.

The streamer is expanding its relationship with one of children’s television’s most enduring franchises, with a new “Sesame Street” movie now in development alongside additional seasons of the flagship series and the arrival of another familiar spinoff.

The currently untitled film is being developed by Sesame Workshop and Netflix, with Rideback, the company founded by Netflix film chairman Dan Lin, also producing. Details surrounding the story have yet to be revealed, but the project will give Big Bird, Elmo, Cookie Monster and the rest of the neighborhood another opportunity to make the jump into a feature-length adventure.

And there will be plenty more “Sesame Street” before then.

Netflix has renewed the flagship series through Season 62, extending a television legacy that has already introduced generations of children to letters, numbers, friendship and a neighborhood populated by some of the most recognizable characters in children’s entertainment.

Before reaching Season 62, however, Season 57 still has plenty left to share. Volume 4 is scheduled to begin streaming November 23, with Volumes 5 and 6 following in 2027.

Netflix is also reaching a little further into the “Sesame Street” universe. “Mecha Builders,” the animated spinoff originally released in 2022, will join the service beginning October 26. The series reimagines familiar characters including Elmo, Cookie Monster and Abby Cadabby as robotic heroes who use STEM-based problem-solving to tackle some considerably larger challenges.

Taken together, the announcements make Netflix’s plans for “Sesame Street” feel much bigger than simply giving the long-running series another place to stream.

There is now a feature film in development, multiple future seasons secured and additional pieces of the larger franchise making their way onto the platform. For a neighborhood that has spent decades finding new ways to meet children wherever they are watching, its Netflix presence is quickly becoming another substantial chapter in that history.

And that feels rather appropriate for “Sesame Street.”

Television has changed dramatically since children first learned how to count alongside the Count or discovered the alphabet with Big Bird and his friends, but Sesame Workshop’s characters have repeatedly changed along with it without losing the educational heart that made them so beloved in the first place.

Now their neighborhood is getting a little bigger once again.

A new “Sesame Street” movie is in development at Netflix, while Volume 4 of Season 57 begins streaming November 23. “Mecha Builders” joins Netflix October 26, with even more “Sesame Street” adventures already waiting further down the road.

It looks like the street signs are pointing toward Netflix for quite a while.
