Rick Riordan’s “The Kane Chronicles” Finds New Life at Disney+

The world of gods, monsters and young heroes created by Rick Riordan might be getting considerably larger on Disney+.

“Percy Jackson and the Olympians” has already given fans a new chance to see Camp Half-Blood and Riordan’s mythology-filled world brought to life on screen. Yet Percy was never the only hero—or mythology—the author explored. Now Disney is looking towards another corner of that universe as “The Kane Chronicles” is officially in development for a potential Disney+ series.

As first exclusively reported by Variety, Disney+ is developing a television adaptation of Riordan’s Egyptian mythology-inspired book trilogy. Should the project receive a series order, Angela Robinson will write and executive produce alongside Riordan, bringing siblings Carter and Sadie Kane and their considerably complicated family history to television.

“The Kane Chronicles” begins with “The Red Pyramid” and follows estranged siblings Carter and Sadie, descendants of the pharaohs Narmer and Ramses the Great. After their father accidentally unleashes Set, the Egyptian god of chaos, and disappears, the siblings discover their family’s connection to magic and are thrown into a world of ancient gods, dangerous powers and a considerably larger destiny than either could have expected.

For longtime Riordan readers, however, there is another reason this particular adaptation is interesting. Carter and Sadie’s adventures exist within the same larger universe as “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” and “Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard,” making the potential series another piece of a mythology world that Disney is increasingly building around Riordan’s work.

It is also a second chance for “The Kane Chronicles” to finally make the leap from page to screen.

Netflix previously spent several years developing feature-film adaptations of the books before allowing its option to lapse. Riordan revealed in 2024 that the streamer would no longer be moving forward with the project, leaving the future of the adaptation uncertain. Now the Kanes have found their way to Disney, where Riordan already has an established creative relationship thanks to “Percy Jackson and the Olympians.”

The potential series is being developed at 20th Television, with Riordan reuniting with “Percy Jackson” executive producers Ellen Goldsmith-Vein and Jeremy Bell of the Gotham Group. Rebecca Riordan will also executive produce. Robinson’s previous credits include “True Blood,” “The L Word,” “How to Get Away With Murder” and “Wednesday.”

For readers who have spent years moving between Greek, Roman, Egyptian and Norse mythology through Riordan’s books, the possibility of another one of those worlds receiving a full television adaptation is exciting on its own. Yet “The Kane Chronicles” potentially joining “Percy Jackson” on Disney+ also raises the much more interesting possibility of just how expansive Riordan’s screen universe could eventually become.

There are plenty more gods—and plenty more young heroes—waiting for their turn.
