For years, we have called it Nintendo’s live-action “Legend of Zelda” movie. Yet technically, the long-awaited adaptation of Link and Zelda’s adventures never actually had an official title.
Well, now it does. And you can probably guess what it is.
“The Legend of Zelda.”
Sony Pictures and Nintendo have officially given their upcoming live-action adaptation the wonderfully straightforward title, “The Legend of Zelda,” as the movie continues its journey toward theaters. Perhaps more importantly, its previously announced April 30, 2027 release date remains in place.
It might not be the most surprising title reveal, but there is something exciting about seeing one of Nintendo’s most important franchises continue taking tangible steps toward its big-screen debut. For decades, “The Legend of Zelda” has allowed players to explore Hyrule, solve puzzles, venture through dungeons and join Link on countless quests. Now, audiences are getting closer to seeing what that world will look like beyond the games.
Wes Ball is directing the adaptation, with Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto producing alongside Avi Arad. Nintendo and Sony Pictures Entertainment are co-financing the movie, with Nintendo providing more than half of the financing.
And, of course, Hyrule already has its two most important residents.
Bo Bragason will step into the role of Princess Zelda, while Benjamin Evan Ainsworth will wield the mantle of Link. Uli Latukefu is set to play Ganondorf, giving our heroes the rather formidable villain they will presumably have to contend with when their adventure begins. Dichen Lachman and Yvonne Strahovski are also among the cast, while the late Sam Neill filmed his role prior to his passing.
T.S. Nowlin penned the most recent draft of the screenplay.
For Nintendo, “The Legend of Zelda” also represents another major step in bringing its characters beyond the game console. Following the enormous expansion of “Super Mario” into theatrical animation, theme parks and other entertainment, Zelda offers something considerably different: a sweeping fantasy world filled with mythology, adventure and generations of stories from which filmmakers can draw.
Exactly what story the movie will tell, however, remains one of Hyrule’s biggest mysteries. The franchise has spent 40 years reinventing Link, Zelda and their world across different eras and incarnations, giving the filmmakers plenty of possibilities without requiring a direct recreation of any one game.
For now, at least one mystery has finally been solved.
Nintendo’s live-action Zelda movie is officially “The Legend of Zelda.”
Sometimes the simplest answer really was sitting right in front of us the entire time.
“The Legend of Zelda” is directed by Wes Ball and will arrive in theaters April 30, 2027.
