NFL FLAG Football Gets Kids Moving With New Nex Playground Game

Football season is here, but watching from the sidelines isn’t the only way for younger fans to get into the game.

For generations, sports video games have allowed kids to step into the shoes of their favorite players, take control of their favorite teams and make the plays they could previously only watch on television. Yet Nex Playground has been steadily approaching the idea of sports gaming a little differently. Rather than sitting on the couch and pressing a button to throw the ball, what if you actually had to get up and make the play yourself?

That is exactly what Nex and the NFL are doing with “NFL FLAG Heroes,” a new motion-powered flag football game available exclusively on Nex Playground.

Featuring all 32 NFL clubs, “NFL FLAG Heroes” puts players in the dual role of quarterback and team captain as they compete in 5-on-5 flag football. Using Nex Playground’s motion-tracking technology, kids physically choose plays, line up behind the center, snap the ball and control the action with their own movements.

Matches are intentionally kept short, consisting of two two-minute halves and generally lasting around four to five minutes. Players can create their own quarterback, assemble a roster of teammates and represent their favorite NFL club using official team logos and jerseys.

There is also considerably more here than simply jumping into individual matches. Players progress from the School Field to NFL FLAG Regionals before eventually reaching NFL FLAG Champs, unlocking expanded playbooks, new challenges and additional gameplay concepts along the way. Completing games and objectives also earns cosmetics, quarterback upgrade cards, collectible teammates and other rewards.

For kids who don’t already know their way around the field, “NFL FLAG Heroes” is designed to teach some of the game along the way. A coach-led tutorial introduces the fundamentals before the first match, while optional Training Days cover concepts including reading defenses, selecting plays, operating in open space and running the ball.

That educational component comes at an interesting moment for flag football itself. According to the NFL, there are now 4.1 million youth flag football athletes in the United States, representing growth of more than 50 percent since 2020. The sport is offered at the high school level across 40 states and jurisdictions, while more than 250 colleges and universities have women’s flag football programs. Globally, more than 20 million people play across 100 countries, and flag football is preparing to make its Olympic debut at the 2028 Summer Games in Los Angeles.

That makes “NFL FLAG Heroes” more than another way to put NFL logos into a video game. It gives younger fans an approachable introduction to a form of football that is rapidly becoming a much bigger part of youth sports, while still packaging everything inside the progression, customization and rewards they expect from a game.

And because this is Nex Playground, scoring that winning touchdown requires a little more than moving your thumbs.

You have to get off the couch and make the play.
