More Fairy-Tale Mysteries Await in “The Sisters Grimm” Season 2

Fairy tales are rarely quite as simple as happily ever after.

Especially when the characters from those stories are real, your parents have mysteriously vanished and your family happens to be descended from the Brothers Grimm.

After introducing viewers to the strange secrets hidden throughout Ferryport Landing last year, Apple TV is opening the storybook once again with the second season of “The Sisters Grimm,” set to premiere globally October 2.

Based on Michael Buckley’s bestselling book series, “The Sisters Grimm” follows Sabrina and Daphne Grimm, two very different sisters who discover that their family history is considerably more complicated than they could have imagined. Fairy tales aren’t simply stories in their world, and the creatures and characters generations have grown up reading about are very much real.

Of course, knowing that doesn’t exactly make solving the mystery surrounding their missing parents any easier.

Season two picks up one year after their parents’ mysterious disappearance, with Sabrina and Daphne continuing to uncover the secrets of Ferryport Landing while finding themselves wrapped up in even more adventures and mysteries along the way.

For a series built around familiar stories, that mystery has always been part of what makes “The Sisters Grimm” interesting. Rather than simply placing recognizable fairy-tale characters on screen, the series uses them as pieces of a much larger world that Sabrina and Daphne are slowly learning how to navigate. At the center of everything, though, remains the relationship between the sisters themselves and the rather effective team they become despite their differences.

Returning for the new season is Ariel Winter as Sabrina, alongside Leah Newman as Daphne. Laraine Newman voices Relda, with Abubakar Salim as Charming, Billy Harris as Puck and Harry Trevaldwyn as Mirror.

The six-episode animated series was developed by Amy Higgins, who also serves as showrunner, alongside Erica Rothschild. Titmouse handles the animation, with Sage Cotugno serving as supervising director. Michael Buckley, Higgins, Elliot Blake, Philip Alberstat, Steven Amato and Theresa Park are among the executive producers alongside Titmouse’s Chris Prynoski, Shannon Prynoski, Ben Kalina and Antonio Canobbio.

The return also continues Apple TV’s growing collection of animation and family programming, which has included everything from “WondLa” and “Frog and Toad” to “Camp Snoopy,” “Shape Island” and “Snoopy Presents” specials.

Yet for Sabrina and Daphne, there are considerably more immediate matters to worry about. Their parents are still missing, Ferryport Landing still has plenty of secrets left to uncover and living in a world filled with fairy-tale creatures has a habit of making even an ordinary mystery anything but ordinary.

Season one may have opened the book on the Grimm sisters’ story, but there are still plenty of pages left to turn.
