Enter the Wizarding World as “Harry Potter” Expands at Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi

Enter the Wizarding World as “Harry Potter” Expands at Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi

For generations of “Harry Potter” fans, there has always been something enchanting about imagining what it would actually be like to step through the pages and enter the Wizarding World.

To wander through Diagon Alley. Explore the halls of Hogwarts. Venture a little too close to the Forbidden Forest. Perhaps even discover whether that wand in your hand can actually perform a little magic.

Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi is getting ready to make even more of that fantasy a reality.

The already announced “Harry Potter” expansion coming to the indoor theme park on Yas Island will bring three of the Wizarding World’s most recognizable locations together, with lands inspired by Hogwarts Castle, Diagon Alley and the Forbidden Forest. While an opening date remains some years away, new details are beginning to offer a better idea of just how immersive this version of the Wizarding World could become.

And apparently, simply looking at the magic won’t be enough.

Concept designer Kat Chang, who previously worked with Thinkwell on the project, has revealed that her role included providing concept designs for interactive experiences throughout the environments. While those plans date back to development work in 2024 and could naturally evolve before the lands actually open, they offer an interesting glimpse at the type of experience being envisioned for families.

Exactly what that interactivity will eventually look like has yet to be revealed. Universal’s existing “Harry Potter” lands famously allow guests to use interactive wands to activate magical effects hidden throughout their environments, but that technology is proprietary. Warner Bros. World consequently has an opportunity to create something different for Abu Dhabi, potentially making exploration itself part of the adventure.

That possibility becomes particularly interesting when looking at the other attractions found across Yas Island. Both SeaWorld Abu Dhabi and Yas Waterworld have incorporated interactive games and treasure-hunt-style experiences that encourage visitors to explore their surroundings and discover effects hidden throughout the environment. Bringing a similar philosophy into Hogwarts, Diagon Alley and the Forbidden Forest could give young witches and wizards plenty of reasons to investigate every corner.

After all, half the fun of entering the Wizarding World should be wondering what might happen when you do.

There is another major difference separating this project from the six existing “Harry Potter” theme park lands around the world. Those attractions are operated by Universal, while Abu Dhabi’s expansion will become the first Potter lands located inside a Warner Bros.-branded theme park. That gives the project an interesting opportunity to create its own interpretation of the Wizarding World rather than simply recreating what guests can already experience elsewhere.

One of the biggest examples may be its expected flagship attraction. The enchanted Ford Anglia, which memorably takes to the skies in “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets,” is expected to become the centerpiece of a new ride. The flying car was also prominently featured in the expansion’s announcement video, soaring above Yas Island as another familiar piece of the Wizarding World prepares to find a new home.

The setting itself could help cast another spell. Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi is completely indoors, primarily protecting visitors from the region’s intense heat. Yet that also means its designers don’t have to contend with the same weather and environmental conditions facing traditional outdoor parks, allowing elaborate scenery to surround guests throughout the experience.

For “Harry Potter,” that could make all the difference. Diagon Alley isn’t simply a collection of shops, Hogwarts isn’t merely a castle and the Forbidden Forest certainly isn’t just a few trees. These are places filled with tiny details, strange creatures, hidden corners and bits of magic that have helped generations of readers and viewers imagine that somewhere, somehow, this world might actually exist.

The creative pedigree behind the project certainly knows something about bringing that illusion to life. TAIT is serving as creative consultant on the expansion, with its Thinkwell division having previously worked on Warner Bros. World as well as the “Harry Potter” studio tours outside London and in Tokyo. Those experiences famously bring fans face-to-face with sets, props and environments created from the films and their original designs.

There is still plenty of magic Warner Bros. World hasn’t revealed, including exactly how guests will interact with the environments and what attractions will ultimately fill each land. With the expansion still several years away, those secrets may remain locked somewhere inside Hogwarts for a while longer.

Yet what is beginning to emerge sounds considerably larger than simply adding another destination to the growing Wizarding World. Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi is preparing to give families another way to enter it, explore it and—if those interactive plans survive the journey from concept to completion—perhaps create a little magic of their own.

Because sometimes watching the Wizarding World isn’t enough.

Sometimes you want to step inside.
