“Toy Story 5” Is Bringing Playtime Home With Disney+ Streaming Date

The toys have already conquered the box office.

Now, they are coming home.

Disney and Pixar’s “Toy Story 5” will begin streaming on Disney+ September 23, giving families another chance to jump back into Woody, Buzz, Jessie and the rest of the gang’s latest adventure from the comfort of home.

The streaming debut comes after a massive theatrical run for the fifth main installment in Pixar’s long-running franchise.

“Toy Story 5” opened June 19 with an impressive $160 million, marking the biggest opening of the year and one of the strongest domestic animated openings ever.

Since then, the film has crossed the $1 billion mark globally.

That makes it the third “Toy Story” film to join the billion-dollar club, following “Toy Story 3” and “Toy Story 4.”

Not exactly bad for a group of toys who have spent decades worrying about being left behind.

This time around, the threat to playtime looks a little different.

“Toy Story 5” introduces Lilypad, a new tablet device whose arrival challenges the way Woody, Buzz, Jessie and the rest of Bonnie’s toys understand their place in a child’s life.

It is Toy meets Tech.

And with screens becoming an increasingly regular part of how kids play, the story places the franchise into a very modern conversation about what playtime looks like now compared to when Woody and Buzz first entered our lives.

Andrew Stanton directs the film alongside co-director Kenna Harris, with Lindsey Collins and Jessica Choi producing.

Stanton and Harris also wrote the film, based on a story by Stanton.

The voice cast once again brings back several familiar favorites, including Tom Hanks, Tim Allen and Joan Cusack, alongside Conan O’Brien, Scarlett Spears, Greta Lee, Shelby Rabara and Mykal-Michelle Harris.

The Disney+ arrival is not the only new piece of “Toy Story 5” content landing for fans.

Disney has also released a new music video for Taylor Swift’s original song “I Knew It, I Knew You,” which was created for the film.

The song is performed by Swift and was written and produced by Swift and Jack Antonoff. The accompanying music video is now available through Disney+, Spotify and Apple Music.

For nearly 30 years, “Toy Story” has continued evolving alongside the kids watching it.

The toys have faced moving homes, growing up, being forgotten, finding new purpose and now an entirely new kind of competition for a child’s attention.

Yet somehow, they keep finding their way back.

This time, quite literally into the living room.
