The temperatures might finally be starting to cool down, but things are only heating up when it comes to what kids and families will be able to stream this September.
As we trade those long summer days for the return of school, changing leaves and the start of fall, Netflix is getting ready to welcome the new season with a mix of familiar favorites, returning adventures and some rather interesting new additions.
And for animation fans, September is looking especially nostalgic.
Kicking things off on September 1 are several animated and family films that might have you thinking back to a very different era of movie nights.
DreamWorks Animation’s 1998 film “Antz” joins the service, taking viewers deep underground for the story of an anxious worker ant whose desire for something more ultimately leads to a revolution.
From underground to under the sea, “Shark Tale” is also swimming onto Netflix. The 2004 animated comedy follows the fast-talking Oscar, voiced by Will Smith, who suddenly finds himself enjoying ocean-wide fame after taking credit for the death of a mobster shark. Of course, fame comes with consequences — especially when the shark mafia gets involved.
And we’re going even further back in time with “The Flintstones.”
The colorful 1994 live-action adaptation of the classic animated series stars John Goodman as Fred Flintstone, bringing Bedrock, its prehistoric residents and all of those Stone Age puns into the real world.
But September isn’t only about looking back.
On September 14, it is time to get tiny as “Gabby’s Dollhouse” returns with Season 14. The long-running Netflix preschool favorite continues to open the doors of the Dollhouse for more colorful adventures with Gabby and her collection of adorable cat friends.
Then grab those Poké Balls, because another round of adventure awaits.
“Pokémon Horizons” continues on September 18 with Season 3 — “Rising Hope Part 4.” With the newest era of the Pokémon animated franchise continuing to unfold, fans will have another collection of episodes to keep the journey going.
Things take a sweeter turn on September 23 with “Wonka’s The Golden Ticket.”
The new Netflix Original reality competition expands the world of Roald Dahl’s famous creation into an entirely different format. Rather than another scripted visit to the chocolate factory, the series turns the IP into a competition as contestants enter the fantastical world associated with Willy Wonka.
But perhaps one of September’s more unexpected additions arrives at the very end of the month.
The Straw Hats have already sailed from manga to anime and then into Netflix’s live-action adaptation. Now they are getting ready to build their next adventure one brick at a time.
“LEGO One Piece” arrives September 29, giving the live-action adaptation of the beloved manga and anime franchise its own LEGO adaptation.
Yes, an adaptation of an adaptation of an adaptation. We love to see it.
Between nostalgic DreamWorks favorites, another season of “Gabby’s Dollhouse,” more “Pokémon Horizons” and the increasingly expansive world of “One Piece,” September is giving kids and families plenty to stream as we officially sail away from summer and into another busy fall season.
