It looks like another one of Pixar’s biggest franchises is getting ready to make its grand return.
But this time, the parents are going to have to move over.
When The Incredibles first arrived in theaters back in 2004, the story largely centered around Bob Parr, aka Mr. Incredible, as the former superhero struggled with leaving his glory days behind and settling into everyday family life.
Then, when the Parr family finally returned for Incredibles 2 in 2018, it was Helen’s turn to step into the spotlight. With Elastigirl becoming the face of an effort to bring superheroes back into the public eye, Bob stayed home and discovered that raising three superpowered children could be an adventure all its own.
Now, for Incredibles 3, it is finally the kids’ turn.
During D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event, Pixar revealed the first concept art and new story details for the third installment in the beloved superhero franchise. And this time around, Violet, Dash and Jack-Jack are moving into the leading roles.
With superheroes finally legal again following the events of Incredibles 2, the Parr kids apparently aren’t interested in waiting around for their parents to give them permission to save the day.
Instead, Violet, Dash and Jack-Jack will begin sneaking out of the house at night to protect the city — all while keeping their superhero adventures hidden from Bob and Helen.
Which already sounds like the perfect recipe for Parr family chaos.
Though one of the biggest questions surrounding a third Incredibles film has been whether Pixar would finally allow the family to age. After all, despite the 14-year gap between the first two films, almost no time passed within the story itself.
And it looks like Pixar is sticking with that approach.
Writer Brad Bird has confirmed that there will not be a major time jump for Incredibles 3, meaning Violet, Dash and Jack-Jack will remain around the ages we already know them.
While we might not get to see an older version of the Parr children just yet, putting them at the center of the story opens up plenty of other interesting possibilities.
Violet has already come a long way from the shy teenager who struggled to control her powers in the original film. Dash has never exactly been afraid to test the limits of his super speed. And then there is Jack-Jack, whose seemingly endless collection of abilities has barely begun to be understood.
So what happens when these three start operating without their parents watching over them?
Could Violet discover entirely new ways to use her invisibility and force fields? How much faster can Dash become as he learns to better control his speed? And perhaps most importantly, what exactly is Jack-Jack capable of once he begins gaining some control over that wild collection of powers?
But there is another interesting direction Pixar could explore.
The Parr children were quite literally born into the superhero world. Their parents are two of its most famous heroes, their family friends include the likes of Frozone, and now they are growing up in a world where superheroes are once again celebrated.
Yet being born with incredible powers doesn’t automatically mean someone will always make the right choices.
Could one of these hero-bred kids eventually find themselves walking a little closer to the darker side of being a Super? Or could sneaking around behind their parents’ backs lead Violet, Dash and Jack-Jack into situations they aren’t quite prepared to handle?
After two films largely centered around Bob and Helen learning how to balance being superheroes with being parents, Incredibles 3 has the opportunity to flip that dynamic around. Now their children have to begin figuring out what being a hero actually means for themselves.
And something tells us Mr. Incredible and Elastigirl aren’t going to be thrilled when they discover their kids have been sneaking out to fight crime.
Craig T. Nelson and Holly Hunter will return as Bob and Helen Parr, alongside Sarah Vowell as Violet, Huck Milner as Dash and Samuel L. Jackson as Frozone.
There will also be a major change behind the scenes. While Brad Bird, who directed the first two films, is returning to write the third installment, Elemental and The Good Dinosaur director Peter Sohn will step behind the camera for the Parr family’s newest adventure.
We still have plenty to learn about what dangers are waiting for this new generation of Supers.
But after Mr. Incredible and Elastigirl each got their chance to lead the family into action, it feels only fitting that their children finally get to show us what they can do.
Incredibles 3 arrives in theaters June 16, 2028.
