Disney Axes Live-Action “Power Rangers” Series

Disney Axes Live-Action “Power Rangers” Series

It’s morphin time…isn’t it?

Fans of the legacy live-action action series “Power Rangers” have been waiting with bated breath around the long-standing rumors that media and entertainment powerhouse Disney was working on a refresh of the franchise.

The news, having first broken back in 2025, positioned Disney to be working with the current license holder, Hasbro. Together, the two were slated to refresh the ’90s-rooted action series for a new generation.

Since the news first broke over a year ago, there have been limited details surrounding the creative choices both companies would potentially be making with this reboot. If it would leverage one of the existing series inside of the “Power Rangers” catalog. Or perhaps utilize other non-adapted entries from the “Super Sentai” series—which has recently concluded its multi-decade-long run in Japan. In addition to the possibility that this new take would be entirely original.

With many unknowns, fans of the popular series flocked to online spaces and shared their excitement and theories. All while receiving no new updates surrounding the project.

Until now. Coming in during the weekend of Disney’s biannual news cycle, it has now been confirmed that Disney will no longer be moving forward with the “Power Rangers” reboot.

With the series having been in limbo inside of development, fans will never know the specifics of what creative choices were being kept under wraps. However, it has been noted that the reason for the series not progressing isn’t based on creative reasoning, according to the accounts and sources being cited online. Rather, financial reasons have been the final nail in the coffin for the return of our multi-colored hero teams.

Given this isn’t a purely Disney-maintained, licensed or acquired property, the entertainment company doesn’t have enough ownership in the franchise to make this level of financial commitment viable for them. Leading to more understanding from the consumer side when looking at the greater collection of recent acquisitions and adaptations that have been announced within the past few months.

Though Disney is no longer positioned to be curating the next generation of “Power Rangers,” that doesn’t mean the series has reached its final days. Despite “Super Sentai” having concluded in Japan with “No.1 Sentai Gozyuger,” the 49th entry, there are plenty of series from the parent franchise that could be adapted into English-speaking and focused series. As well as great demand from the existing fanbase to see more stories and have the chance to share them with the kids in their lives.

However, such a move rests entirely on that of Hasbro. Given that the “Power Rangers” title has moved around between various companies, it wouldn’t be a stretch to see this occur again.

But that is only something time will tell.

Given one of the core tenets of “Power Rangers” is that of never relenting, it’s safe to assume that character trait will be key in seeing a dawn of a new day for the Rangers.
