“Care Bears” Enters a New Era as Authentic Completes Major IP Acquisition

“Care Bears” Enters a New Era as Authentic Completes Major IP Acquisition

The Care Bears have spent more than four decades reminding generations that a little kindness, understanding and plenty of heart can go a very long way.

Now, one of the most recognizable character brands in the world is preparing for its next chapter.

Authentic Brands Group has officially completed its acquisition of the Care Bears intellectual property, bringing the long-running franchise into its portfolio while establishing character IP as an entirely new vertical for the company.

And with more than 40 years of history behind these colorful bears, Authentic isn’t simply picking up another familiar name.

It is gaining a franchise that already stretches across generations.

First introduced in the early 1980s as a greeting card concept, Care Bears quickly grew into something much larger. From toys and animated series to films, apparel and countless licensed products, characters like Cheer Bear, Funshine Bear and Grumpy Bear have remained recognizable through multiple eras of kids’ entertainment.

Today, the Care Bears universe includes more than 100 characters, each built around a different emotion or personality, with the brand reaching audiences in more than 190 countries and 26 languages.

That global reach has also helped Care Bears generate more than $12 billion in lifetime retail sales, supported by more than 500 licensing partners around the world.

Now Authentic is looking to build on that foundation.

The company has assembled a new senior leadership team to guide Care Bears through its next phase, with Simon Philips serving as executive vice president of character brands. Philips brings experience from Moonbug Entertainment, Marvel Entertainment and Disney, and is joined by Charlotte Payne, Amy Sullivan and Cristina Villegas across brand management, retail development and entertainment.

Together, the group will focus on expanding Care Bears through content, products, experiences, partnerships and global licensing.

Authentic Studios and Authentic Live are also expected to help shape the next era of Care Bears storytelling and experiences, suggesting that this move is about much more than simply maintaining the brand’s current footprint.

For longtime fans, however, the biggest question will be how much changes.

And that is where this acquisition becomes especially interesting.

Care Bears has remained relevant because the heart of the franchise has always been remarkably simple. These characters represent feelings kids understand. Happiness. Frustration. Friendship. Compassion. Sometimes even being a little grumpy.

Those ideas worked for children in the 1980s, and they still work for kids discovering the characters today.

The challenge now is finding new ways to introduce those same ideas without losing what made the brand feel special in the first place.

For Authentic, Care Bears also represents something entirely new.

The company is already one of the largest licensors in the world, but Care Bears becomes its first character-driven intellectual property, opening the door for Authentic to expand even further into children’s entertainment and character brands.

And if this first move is any indication, the company is starting with one very established group of friends.

So while the Care Bears may now have a new home, the mission remains much the same.

Keep sharing the feelings.

Keep spreading a little kindness.

And get ready to see where Care-a-Lot goes next.

Mother of three. That does not include the dog or my husband either! We have a full household of fun and we just love trying new products of all varieties. May not watch as many kids shows as the rest of the family though.
