It’s time for a splash into the sea.
With the hottest days of summer still ahead of us, it’s the perfect time for a cool escape beneath the waves.
For Barbie fans, 2026 has largely been dedicated to celebrating the upcoming anniversary of the franchise’s very first animated feature film, Barbie in The Nutcracker. Throughout the year, Mattel has rolled out waves of anniversary merchandise, including newly reimagined dolls inspired by the beloved holiday classic, books, Funko collectibles, and more. The celebration will ultimately culminate in a brand-new animated retelling starring Barbie “Brooklyn” Roberts and Barbie “Malibu” Roberts as they introduce a new generation of fans to the iconic story.
While those festivities continue, it appears Mattel may already be preparing to revisit another fan-favorite chapter from Barbie’s animated history.
Thanks to a newly discovered online doll listing, the company appears poised to give Barbie in A Mermaid’s Tale a fresh modern spotlight.
The move makes sense when viewed alongside Mattel’s current strategy. Not only has the company been celebrating milestone entries in Barbie’s animated legacy, but it has also shifted much of its storytelling toward YouTube-first content. That approach has already been reflected in the new short-form animated Barbie series released throughout the summer, and it seems likely the upcoming Nutcracker retelling will follow a similar path.
Rather than revisiting another title from Barbie’s earliest animated era, Mattel has instead turned its attention to one of the franchise’s more modern fantasy adventures.
Originally released on home media in 2010, Barbie in A Mermaid’s Tale follows teenage surfing champion Merliah Summers. During a surfing competition, her hair suddenly transforms with vibrant pink highlights, setting off a chain of discoveries that changes her life forever. Merliah soon learns that she is not only human but also a mermaid princess, forcing her to journey beneath the sea to save both her kingdom and her long-lost mother.
The film proved popular enough to receive the rare honor of a direct sequel, Barbie in A Mermaid’s Tale 2, which debuted in 2012.
Fantasy has always been one of the defining pillars of Barbie’s animated legacy, making A Mermaid’s Tale a fitting choice for a modern revival. At the same time, it remains something of a surprising selection given the many other beloved films in Barbie’s extensive animated catalog that fans have hoped to see revisited.
Nevertheless, it’s exciting to see Mattel continue embracing the stories that helped shape Barbie’s animated identity. Whether this renewed attention leads to additional revivals or eventually inspires an entirely new wave of original fantasy adventures, it demonstrates that the company’s animated legacy remains an important part of Barbie’s future.
