A Classic Kids’ Favorite Gets a New Life as “De Fabeltjeskrant” Returns for a Global Generation

Everything old can become new again.

Across kids’ entertainment, we have seen plenty of familiar characters and stories reintroduced for a new generation. But there is something especially interesting about bringing back a series that helped define childhood for an entire part of the world — while also preserving the original work that made it special in the first place.

That is exactly what is happening with the Dutch children’s classic De Fabeltjeskrant.

The long-running puppet series, which first debuted in 1968, is preparing for a major international revival that will see more than 1,600 original episodes restored while an entirely new CGI series is developed for modern audiences.

And this is not simply about dusting off an old title.

De Fabeltjeskrant, which translates to The Fables Newspaper, became a major cultural touchstone in the Netherlands and Belgium, following the residents of the Great Animal Forest as Meneer de Uil, an owl, delivered the latest “news” from their world.

Through humor and simple stories, the series explored ideas surrounding friendship, community, curiosity and respect. Those stories helped the show grow far beyond its home market, with the property eventually sold into 40 countries.

Now the original series is getting another chance to reach families around the world.

Robin de Levita Productions has partnered with the Netherlands Institute for Sound & Vision, Monks and JVDB Studios to restore the episodes using original 16mm film elements that have been preserved for more than half a century.

Those restored episodes are expected to be released through the official De Fabeltjeskrant YouTube channel, giving longtime fans a way to revisit the Great Animal Forest while also making the original stories far easier for younger audiences to discover.

At the same time, a new CGI incarnation of the property is now in development.

The upcoming version will reimagine the Great Animal Forest and its characters through current-generation animation and digital production technology, while keeping the values that helped define the original series.

That balance between preservation and reinvention may be what makes this revival particularly interesting.

Rather than replacing the original with something new, the team is creating two entry points into the franchise at once. Older viewers who grew up with the puppet series can revisit those stories in restored form, while younger children can be introduced to the same world through a completely new visual approach.

And in an era where streaming and digital platforms have made it easier than ever for local children’s classics to find international audiences, De Fabeltjeskrant suddenly has an opportunity to become something much larger than a nostalgic return.

The new CGI series will be presented to international buyers at MIPCOM in October, as the team looks to build a new global future for the long-running property.

More than 50 years after the Great Animal Forest first opened its doors, its residents are getting ready to meet a whole new generation.

And if there is one thing kids’ storytelling continues to prove, it is that the best stories do not really disappear.

Sometimes, they are simply waiting for the right moment to be told again.
