The journey from the toy shelf to the television screen continues.
Over the past decade, some of children’s biggest toy brands have evolved far beyond playtime, embracing animated series, digital shorts and original movies that allow young fans to spend even more time with the worlds and characters they love. Now, L.O.L. Surprise! is taking the next step in that evolution.
As part of the brand’s 10th anniversary celebration, MGA Entertainment has officially announced L.O.L. Surprise! The Next Headliner, the franchise’s very first live-action scripted series. The eight-episode musical comedy premieres Aug. 1 on the official L.O.L. Surprise! YouTube channel, with new episodes arriving bi-weekly before a two-part season finale.
The new series follows five aspiring performers who believe they are competing for the opportunity of a lifetime. However, as the competition unfolds, they discover that success isn’t about standing apart from one another—it’s about working together, embracing their individuality and ultimately finding their voice as a band.
Blending mockumentary-style comedy, original music and aspirational pop-star storytelling, The Next Headliner continues L.O.L.’s growing connection to music, a major theme of the brand’s yearlong 10th anniversary celebration. Each episode will feature original songs performed by the cast, with a full soundtrack album scheduled to release alongside the finale.
The project also represents another exciting milestone for toy-inspired entertainment. Throughout the 2010s, audiences watched many beloved toy brands expand into animated web series, streaming specials and direct-to-home adventures, allowing storytelling to become just as important as the toys themselves. Today, that evolution continues as brands embrace longer-form productions that invite families to spend even more time with these characters beyond the toy aisle.
For L.O.L. Surprise!, that progression feels especially natural. Since debuting 10 years ago, the franchise has grown into a global phenomenon with more than $7 billion in retail sales while continually expanding into animation, digital content, licensed products and live experiences. The Next Headliner represents its most ambitious storytelling venture yet, building upon that foundation through a premium scripted series.
The live-action series is just one part of L.O.L. Surprise!’s music-themed anniversary celebration, which also includes collectible dolls inspired by global music stars Jennie and Rosalía, new Music Festival playsets, live fan experiences, original entertainment and additional surprises still waiting to be revealed.
As children’s entertainment continues to blur the line between toys, music and storytelling, projects like L.O.L. Surprise! The Next Headliner demonstrate how today’s biggest brands are creating complete entertainment experiences. What once began in the toy aisle is increasingly finding new life on screens, allowing imaginative play to continue long after the dolls have been put away.
