Every creative journey has to begin somewhere.

For aspiring artists hoping to one day see their illustrations appear on “Magic: The Gathering” cards, Hasbro is offering a behind-the-scenes look at how that dream can become a reality through the latest installment of its Women Innovators of Play initiative.

Premiering as part of the program’s newest “Spark Moment” documentary series, the short film follows four accomplished Magic: The Gathering artists as they share their paths into the industry, the inspiration behind their work and the lessons they learned while building their careers.

Featured throughout the documentary are artists Natalie Andrewson, Alayna Danner, Evyn Fong and Nana Qi (“Puffygator”), who help bring the game’s iconic creatures, memorable characters and fantasy worlds to life. Alongside their personal stories, members of Magic’s art direction team also provide viewers with an inside look at the collaborative creative process behind one of the world’s most recognizable trading card games.

The documentary made its debut during the first in-person Women Innovators of Play event, hosted in partnership with Women in Toys, Licensing & Entertainment at Wizards of the Coast’s headquarters in Renton, Washington. Following the screening, attendees participated in a panel discussion featuring creatives involved with Magic: The Gathering’s “Secret Lair x Global Fund for Women: Their Magic Is Limitless” collection, which celebrates the diverse experiences of women while supporting the Global Fund for Women.

Since launching in 2023, Women Innovators of Play has focused on encouraging more women and girls to pursue careers across the toy, gaming and entertainment industries through mentorship opportunities, educational content, industry discussions and creative challenges.

For those inspired to follow in these artists’ footsteps, Wizards of the Coast continues to accept freelance art portfolio submissions throughout the year while also hosting portfolio reviews with members of the Magic: The Gathering art team during MagicCon events.

The initiative will also continue later this year with the return of the 2026 Women Innovators of Play Design Challenge, opening on October 15. Aspiring inventors, game designers and storytellers will once again have the opportunity to submit original concepts for the chance to earn mentorship from Hasbro leaders, a trip to Hasbro headquarters and a cash prize.

For young creators dreaming of turning their passion into a profession, Hasbro’s latest “Spark Moment” serves as a reminder that every artist’s career starts with a single idea—and perhaps the courage to share it.

Mother of three. That does not include the dog or my husband either! We have a full household of fun and we just love trying new products of all varieties. May not watch as many kids shows as the rest of the family though.
