…And are we utterly not ready for it.
There is a lot to love about “Miraculous,” and season six has truly doubled down on all the things that make this series special. While the show is built around the familiar hero-versus-villain structure audiences have come to expect from superhero stories, the true strength of Miraculous has always been its characters, their emotions and the personal struggles they face.
In Paris, villains don’t develop simply because they want to take over the world. They are born from powerful emotions, personal conflicts and overwhelming feelings tied to the everyday realities of their lives. Complications that are rarely as black and white as they may initially seem.
A true case in point is the conflict both Marinette and Adrien are facing this season, all while neither fully understands what the other is struggling with internally.
For months, we have discussed how the fallout from Gabriel’s death has created a chain reaction that continues to impact both of our leads. It has forced them to confront their realities in very different ways, and neither path has been easy.
While Adrien has been trying to move forward, discover who he is and make sense of the father he thought he knew, he is still only receiving fragments of the truth from those around him. Marinette, meanwhile, feels as though she is only one step away from a complete emotional collapse as the weight of the secret she carries grows heavier by the day.
It is abundantly clear that she loves Adrien and would do anything to protect him.
But the question is no longer how strong that love is.
The question is how much longer she can continue burying the truth before it breaks her.
And then, who saves the hero from herself when her own act of love is slowly consuming her from within?
That appears to be the question at the center of the season six finale, “Secret Protocol.”
It may be her mother’s birthday, and naturally Marinette wants nothing more than to celebrate the occasion. But not everything is flowers, laughter and beautifully decorated cake for our hero. Something unseen is threatening both the celebration and Marinette herself.
In this teaser, which feels shorter than many of the previews we’ve seen this season, there isn’t a great deal of footage to reveal how the episode will unfold. Yet what little we do see paints a very intense picture.
We watch an increasingly anxious Marinette scanning the world outside her window, speaking with Tikki and staring nervously at her phone. We don’t have the full context, but it is a side of Marinette we rarely see. Especially from a character who is usually defined by her optimism and determination. Whatever is happening, it feels significant.
Not only do we see a birthday cake smashed and destroyed, but it almost feels as though something inside Marinette is breaking as well.
And perhaps later, Cat Noir too.
While emotional reactions during battles are nothing new for our heroes, there is something particularly unsettling about the intensity we see from Cat Noir here. His expressions alone suggest that this is not just another fight. Whatever unfolds appears deeply personal, and the emotional consequences may linger long after the battle itself has ended.
What exactly won’t be forgotten?
That, we simply don’t know.
With Lila continuing to pull at loose threads, The Kingdom becoming increasingly aggressive and Gabriel’s secrets still casting a shadow over everything, the pieces are steadily moving toward a climax as season six approaches its conclusion.
As excited as we are to discover what happens next, there is also a lingering feeling that major change is on the horizon.
And this time, it may not arrive wrapped in the happy ending everyone hopes for.
