Shrek and Donkey Are Back In Teaser Trailer for Next Summer’s “Shrek 5”

Shrek and Donkey Are Back In Teaser Trailer for Next Summer’s “Shrek 5”

Family movie nights have a unique way of bringing generations together.

Whether it is introducing younger viewers to beloved classics or revisiting favorite stories from childhood, there is something special about sharing the films that helped shape our own love of storytelling.

Few animated franchises have managed to remain a part of those conversations quite like Shrek.

For more than two decades, the adventures of the lovable ogre, his devoted family and his unforgettable group of fairy tale friends have entertained audiences across multiple generations. What began in 2001 as a fresh and unconventional take on classic fairy tales quickly became one of the most recognizable animated franchises of all time.

Now, DreamWorks Animation is preparing to welcome families back to Far Far Away once again.

Arriving in theaters next summer, Shrek 5 reunites audiences with the franchise’s iconic trio of Shrek, Fiona and Donkey while introducing a new chapter for the family. Comedy legends Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz return to their signature roles, while Emmy Award-winning superstar Zendaya joins the cast as Shrek and Fiona’s daughter, Felicia.

Also joining the cast are Marcello Hernandez as Fergus and Skyler Gisondo as Farkle, bringing the next generation of the Shrek family into the spotlight.

In the newly released teaser, audiences are transported back to the whimsical fantasy world that has captivated viewers for more than two decades. While life has certainly moved forward for Shrek and his family, some things never seem to change.

Donkey, for one, remains as energetic and eager for adventure as ever.

More than ready to drag his begrudging best friend into yet another larger-than-life escapade, Donkey appears to have lost none of the enthusiasm fans have come to expect from the beloved character. Though Shrek himself would likely prefer a quieter life, adventure has always had a habit of finding him anyway.

The teaser moves quickly, offering viewers a brief glimpse at returning favorites and the now older Shrek family. While it doesn’t reveal enough to fully determine the film’s central plot or major story beats, it does establish the tone audiences can expect when the franchise returns to theaters.

Rather than reinventing itself entirely, Shrek 5 appears to be embracing many of the elements that made the series such a success in the first place: epic adventures, fast-paced comedy, heartfelt family moments and plenty of fairy tale chaos.

This time, however, Shrek’s children appear poised to join the adventure alongside their parents, allowing the franchise to continue growing with the audiences that have supported it for so many years.

Behind the scenes, Shrek 5 is being guided by several familiar faces who helped shape the franchise audiences have grown to love. The film is directed by Conrad Vernon and Walt Dohrn, both longtime veterans of the Shrek universe.

Vernon previously worked on the Academy Award-nominated Shrek 2 and remains a fan favorite as the voice of Gingy, the Gingerbread Man. Dohrn contributed to the second and third films as a writer and artist, served as Head of Story on Shrek Forever After and voiced the memorable villain Rumpelstiltskin.

The film is produced by returning producer Gina Shay alongside Illumination CEO and Academy Award nominee Chris Meledandri, with Brad Ableson serving as co-director.

Since its debut in 2001, Shrek has expanded far beyond a single animated feature. The franchise has earned more than $2.9 billion worldwide while inspiring stage productions, theme park attractions, touring experiences and a lasting presence within popular culture.

Part of that success comes from the franchise’s unique ability to appeal to audiences of all ages. While younger viewers continue to discover Shrek, Fiona and Donkey for the first time, many parents now find themselves sharing the same stories they once enjoyed as children with their own families.

That kind of multi-generational connection is increasingly rare.

As Shrek 5 prepares to bring audiences back to Far Far Away, it feels less like a simple sequel and more like a reunion with old friends.

After all, while some things in life may change, others remain wonderfully evergreen—pun very much intended.
