Every Great Story Begins With a Turn of the Page

Some of animation’s biggest adventures didn’t begin on a screen.

They began in the pages of a book.

As studios continue searching for rich worlds, memorable characters and stories with built-in audiences, more publishers and authors are finding their creations making the leap from the bookshelf to animation. The latest title preparing to make that magical journey is The Young Magicians, the children’s fantasy series created by Nick Mohammed.

Best known globally for his Emmy-nominated role in the hit series Ted Lasso, Mohammed is now bringing his literary world to animation through a new partnership with BBC Studios and Blink Industries.

The upcoming animated series follows four talented young magicians — Zack, Sophie, Jonny and Alex — as they uncover hidden conspiracies and mysterious secrets connected to London’s prestigious Magic Circle. Filled with adventure, comedy and plenty of magical intrigue, the project is being developed for audiences ages eight and older.

For animation fans, the announcement continues a growing trend that has become increasingly visible across the industry.

From beloved classics to contemporary middle-grade adventures, publishers’ shelves are becoming one of animation’s most valuable sources of inspiration. The reason is simple: books already provide something every studio hopes to find — engaging characters, established worlds and stories that have already connected with audiences.

But the relationship works both ways.

While books inspire animated series, successful adaptations often encourage viewers to become readers themselves. Children who discover a character through television frequently seek out the original novels to continue the adventure, creating a pathway between two forms of storytelling that strengthens both industries.

That cycle has become increasingly important as studios look for stories with long-term franchise potential and publishers seek new ways to introduce their titles to younger generations.

In many ways, The Young Magicians represents the best of that opportunity.

Not only does it bring a magical mystery adventure to the screen, but it also shines a spotlight on a book series that some young viewers may be discovering for the very first time.

As animation continues to embrace literary worlds, projects like this serve as a reminder that some of tomorrow’s favorite shows may already be sitting on a library shelf today—simply waiting for readers to discover them before they become the next big adaptation.
