Before it’s time to play, it’s time to create and bring new visions to life.
While fans of all ages are gearing up to return to playtime in the next highly anticipated installment of Disney and Pixar’s massive multi-generational franchise, Toy Story 5, there is still some time before the film arrives in theaters worldwide.
As of now, audiences have yet to receive the film’s full trailer, leaving many questions surrounding the direction and emotional trajectory of this newest chapter. However, with the newly revealed cover art for Disney/Pixar The Art of Toy Story 5, fans may finally have their biggest clue yet about where the story is heading.
Based on the artwork’s heavy emphasis on Jessie, speculation is continuing to grow that the longtime fan-favorite cowgirl may finally take center stage in a more Jessie-focused narrative.
Though Jessie has remained an important and beloved part of the franchise since her debut in Toy Story 2, the character has rarely received the same level of emotional focus and story-driven exploration as Woody throughout the series. Because of that, the possibility of seeing Jessie move into a more central role feels like a long-awaited and exciting creative direction for the franchise.
Despite finding a new family and deep connections among Andy’s — and later Bonnie’s — toys, Jessie has never fully confronted the emotional scars left behind after losing her original owner, Emily. With early details surrounding the film pointing toward themes involving children’s growing attachment to technology and tablets over traditional toys, there is growing speculation that Jessie’s lingering fears of abandonment and change could become a major emotional pillar of the story.
Such a direction would also serve as a clever parallel to Woody’s own emotional journey in the previous film, where he was ultimately forced to redefine his purpose and identity beyond being a child’s toy.
Though these ideas remain purely speculative at the time of writing, fans will soon have the opportunity to dive deeper into the film’s creative process and visual development with the release of Disney/Pixar The Art of Toy Story 5, arriving at booksellers on May 26 ahead of the film’s theatrical debut.
