Harold And The Purple Crayon is a live-action, with integrated animation, version of a favorite book and animation that most kids have watched before. It will be coming to theaters in August, but with a PG rating we started to wonder who the audience for this movie really is? Yes, we know the PG rating is listed for mild action and thematic elements that probably wouldn’t garner such a rating in the animated form (we can only guess at this), but it still means we want to give it a view before letting some of the younger kids watch. So we break it down into specific audiences that we list here: Parents of kids that watched/read the older content, kids that read the books/watches animation when they were younger but are grown up a bit, kids that currently are reading the books/watching the animated show.
The Parents: As a parent of kids now in college that have read the books and watched the animated series, this movie is probably not meant for us, the parents of older kids. Maybe as a grandparent with younger kids we would want to take them and we would probably enjoy it, but right now, the bulk adult only audience, not so much.
Older Kids: By older we mean 13 and over, and we feel like this will be a mixed bag. Half the kids will probably have a good time watching and the other half not so much. It is just kid enough for some of them to not want to watch it.
Pre Teens: So this age range let’s say 7-12, they will probably enjoy this movie even if they do not go out of their way to say that they want to see it. It should have enough for them to keep them engaged. If they have a younger sibling, this would be great for them to watch together.
Younger Kids: We feel like this is where the show would do really well, but that PG rating has us wanting to make sure we watched it first. Every child is different, and we don’t know the extent of mild action and thematic elements. When things happen in a cartoon, it is very easy to explain to a child that it is make believe, not so much when live action is involved.
We are just not sure a live action Harold And The Purple Crayon was needed, but we will tell you that we are not fans of shows that go from animated to live action in general, so we may be biased a bit. We do like the casting of Zachary Levi as Harold, that was genius.
