UNDER WRAPS – Disney’s “Under Wraps” stars Sophia Hammons as Amy.
(Disney/Brendan Meadows)
We are so excited for Under Wraps and Sophia Hammons talks with us about the movie, her career and more prior to the premiere.
Teen Actress Sophia Hammons stars in the new Disney Channel Original Movie “Under Wraps,” which premieres on October 1, 2021.
BSCKids: Sophia, tell us a little bit about your character in Under Wraps and do you have anything in common with your character?
Sophia Hammons: I play Amy in Under Wraps. She’s the new kid in town. She’s tough but sweet and ready to make friends. She wants to be an investigative reporter, and she’s intrigued when she learns about a missing mummy. Something that Amy and I have in common is that we’re both determined, hard-working, and focused, but Amy has her own ideas about how things should be done, and I kind of just go with the flow.
How did you get the part and were you familiar with the 1997 version of the movie before getting the part?
I wasn’t familiar with the original Under Wraps before I got the audition. I learned a little bit about it after I got the audition, but we decided that it would be better not to see the movie until later so that I could put my own spin on Amy. I was so excited when I learned that I was cast! I cried and jumped around my room. Later, in Vancouver, where we shot the film, I got together with Malachi [Barton, who plays Marshall] and Christian [J. Simon, who plays Gilbert], and we all watched the original together.
Were there any funny behind the scenes stories that happened while filming that you can tell us about?
Every day with Malachi, Christian, and Phil [Wright, who plays Harold the mummy] was fun and full of adventure. One of the funniest things was that Phil was always in his costume because it took so long to put on. So there was always this mummy just hanging around. He would be lying on a couch checking his phone or sitting in a chair drinking a juice box. We would have lunch with the mummy or make a TikTok. It kind of became normal, but whenever I see a picture from set, I think it’s funny that there’s a mummy hanging around.
What has been your favorite Halloween costume you have worn?
My favorite Halloween costume was when I was a zombie schoolgirl. My school didn’t require uniforms, but I was obsessed with them, and Halloween was my once chance to wear one. I zombified it, and it’s still one of my favorite costumes.
If you could guest star in any Disney series past or present which one would it be and why?
I would love to have guest starred on Sydney to the Max, the show that Christian was in. I was a huge fan of Good Luck Charlie – the cast in that show was incredible – and I loved the world of Wizards of Waverly Place.
Who do you feel like has taught you the most in your career?
I’ve had some great acting coaches, but the person who has taught me the most is my dad. He’s a professor of anthropology and film, and I’ve learned so much from him – not just about acting, about about everything. We’ve been on some amazing adventures together, and he’s always there for me
Tell us something people would be surprised to learn about you.
When people who don’t know me meet me for the first time, they’re surprised to learn that I’m an actor. I think that’s because I’m a pretty down to earth person. I’m just a normal kid who happens to love acting and has been blessed with the opportunity to do what I love.
Tell us a bit about working on Netflix’s The Social Dilemma, what did you personally learn from the film?
I had a great experience working on The Social Dilemma. The entire cast and crew was really fun to work with, but it was also educational being around people like Jeff Orlowski and Tristan Harris. They taught me how scary social media can be and how important it to be aware of how you use it. The scariest part is that even though I know that social media is designed to manipulate people, I still have a hard time using it conscientiously. We all do, because it’s designed that way.
What other hobbies do you have?
I love being busy with acting, but in the free time I have, I enjoy being home and hanging out with my friends and my dog Larry. I also LOVE the beach. I could spend hours and hours just floating on a surfboard.
Any other projects you can tell us about that you are working on?
I did a feature film with Zoe Saldana that should be coming out soon, and I have other projects coming up, but I can’t talk about them right. 😉
Why should everyone tune into Under Wraps in October?
Everyone should tune into Under Wraps in October because it’s full of Halloween fun! It’s action-packed, but it’s also really sweet, and it’s got a great message about facing your fears and the value of friendship. Both kids and their parents will love it!
Thanks to Sophia Hammons for taking the time out of her schedule to speak with us, and everyone make sure to tune in to the Disney Channel Original Movie “Under Wraps” on October 1st.
