Let’s us get some stuff out of the way before we discuss the connection, Encanto looks amazing, the story sounds great and the characters look fleshed out as we visit Casa Madrigal in the mountains of Columbia. Once I saw the trailer though, my thoughts immediately went to Piers Anthony’s world of Xanth as it follows a very similar story of a non talented person in a world full of people with talents. Spoilers here for the beginning few books of the Xanth series so be warned.
We really can’t get over how good the setting for Encanto looks but it has a very similar story to Xanth in terms of the main characters not having a talent in a world (or mountain area) full of people with all different talents. Now in Xanth you would be sent away for having no talent but it does not seem like Mirabel has to deal with that in the movie, just that people treat her a bit different for not having a talent. Now what we come to find out is that Bink does have a talent it was just one that was pretty hard to discern, and we think that Mirabel will have something similar. Bink is immune to all magical harm, so obviously a talent that is pretty hard to discern, now with Encanto we do not know if there is going to be a villain or if there is just the story of Mirabel not having a talent or if Casa Madrigal has to be saved, but we think in the end Mirabel will end up with a talent.
Now will this talent be something like Bink or maybe something more along the lines of Ivy’s talent which is to enhance other peoples abilities. We could even have Mirabel being a source of magic? It will be interesting on how the story goes, and hopefully we get something of a different ending than Xanth in terms of the character of Mirabel vs Bink but we are looking forward to seeing how it turns out. Could it be possible that Mirabel has no talent and does not get one, but still manages to overcome? Totally, but we are not playing our money on that ending.
All of that being said, we are thrilled for the release of Encanto in November and it will be one of those that we watch on opening night. Hopeful this will be another one that makes it premiere in theaters as well as Disney+ on the same day.
You’re invited into the exceptional, fantastical and magical Casa Madrigal. 🦋✨ Watch the new trailer for Disney’s Encanto now! See the movie this November.
