We recently had the opportunity to catch up with Chase Brown and talk about his role on the HBO series, Lovecraft Country as well as some of the other things that are going on in his career.
Chase Brown, Birmingham native, will be seen in the highly anticipated HBO series “Lovecraft Country” from Jordan Peele and J.J. Abrams. Based on the novel of the same name by Matt Ruff, “Lovecraft Country” follows the story of ‘Atticus Freeman’ (Jonathan Majors) as he travels across the U.S. in the 1950’s in search of his missing father. The story explores the conjunction between the horror fiction of H.P. Lovecraft and racism in the United States during the era of Jim Crow laws. Chase will take on the role of ‘Young Atticus Freeman’ in the year 1934.
BSCKids: Chase tell us a bit about your character in Lovecraft Country?
Chase Brown: In Lovecraft Country my character is Young Atticus Freeman. I am Young Atticus from the 1930’s when the character played by Jonathan Majors was a young child.
How did you get the role and how do you get in character before filming?
I got the role by submitting my pictures and all of my information. To get into character before filming I talked with my grandmother, who is 85, on how things were during the Jim Crow Era here in Alabama. She talked to me about things that occurred during that time and how she and her sisters and brothers lived. I also had to wear glasses and which was new for me and cut off all of my hair. I then just focused on my scenes.
What do you feel like the most rewarding part of filming this movie was?
The most rewarding part was being a part of an HBO Series and being on set with some really big actors and being able to be a part of a show produced by some really big producers.
Are there any interesting behind the scenes stories you can share with us?
Michael K. William’s barber cut my hair and I had been growing it a very long time. It was way more than I thought I had to cut. It was all of it but Michael K. Williams pulled me to the side and told me not to worry that it will always grow back and that changing your hair is a part of acting. I’ll always remember that.

Why should everyone tune in to watch Lovecraft Country?
Everyone should tune in to watch Lovecraft Country because it’s going to be an exciting horror/thriller. Atticus Freeman’s journey to find his father is going to be quite interesting, but you must tune in to see that journey.

At this time I’m just working on my acting techniques and making sure I’m prepared for my next big audition. I’m also working on different talents such as singing and dancing.
