Sloane Siegel was great in Gortimer Gibbons Life on Normal Street and when we found out that he was the lead in Dwight in Shining Armor it became a must-watch in our house. Dwight in Shining Armor really does have it all, and binge worthy if you have not started watching yet. Getting a chance to talk to Sloane about the show was great treat for us, plus Sloane has the most interesting answers!
Charismatic and multi-talented television and film actor, Sloane Siegel (Amazon’s Emmy-nominated “Gortimer Gibbons Life on Normal Street”) returns to television yet again, leading as “Dwight,” opposite Caitlin Carmichael (LIFE ITSELF) and Joel McCrary (AMERICAN BEAUTY) in the third season of “Dwight in Shining Armor,” (Paramount & BYUtv returning on March 15th) the hilarious, campy family adventure-comedy.
Sloane Siegel Talks Dwight in Shining Armor On BYUTV – Exclusive Interview
BSCKids: Tell us about your character on Dwight in shining Armor and how you got the role.
Sloane Siegel: My character is Dwight, your everyday normal teen who falls into a buried castle and lands lip-to-lip with a 1,000-year-old warrior princess who was under a spell kinda like sleeping beauty. When I (accidentally) break the curse I become her spellbound champion and have to defend her against her hordes of enemies, even though she’s more than capable of defending herself. But, fighting with swords and magic isn’t always the answer and that’s where Dwight comes in. He’s a diplomat that always tries to find a peaceful resolve in a medieval world stuck in modern day.
I got the role like any other audition process, but how I heard about the role was a bit different. The show had flown under my agent’s radar so I didn’t know anything about it. I was actually dating someone at the time who was going out for the role of Gretta and she read the script and told me it was perfect for me. Then, I read it and I got that feeling where you kinda know what the next chapter of your life is going to be.
Do you have your character have anything in common?
We are both incapable of violence to the point that there’s been a fly in my room for a few days. I’ve named them Terry. Terry and I are now roommates. We’re both also very trusting and we’re definitely optimists.
Tell us how you have grown as an actor since Gortimer Gibbon’s Life on Normal Street?
Being on Gortimer taught me a lot and by the time we wrapped the series, I understood how to grow with a character. I became a lot better at learning more lines and how to learn them faster. Also, as I’ve gotten older, I’ve experienced more life and have more emotions and experiences to pull from in a scene. I think I’ve grown in every way as a person and as an actor since Gortimer. And Dwight is my first opportunity at leading a series with the full knowledge that I didn’t have with Gortimer.
If you could have one of the characters on Gortimer guest star on Dwight in shining Armor, who would it be?
First can I say, that this is my favorite question I’ve ever been asked. There are so many possibilities there… The obvious choice would be Gortimer himself. If you’ve seen the ending of Gortimer, then you know he moves somewhere and where better than Woodside? It would also be cool to see Ranger become the leader of a group of bandits or he joins Guy club with Chlodwig. What if Mel and Gretta team up for a battle against witches, Then Mel would have to deal with science not being able to explain magic. I would also like to see Gretta have a run in with the frog of ultimate doom, maybe she wishes for a normal life or something and then the frog curses her and we have to deal with it. I feel like that would be the most reasonable crossover since The golden eyed boy/frog is a magical being. But if I really had to choose I think it would be a pretty shocking thing to have Dwight and Gretta on the run after some magical being only then to run in the Mini-mart where they’re greeted by Egg. It would be a reality shock for anybody that loved both shows.

What would you say has been your favorite episode of the show so far?
I’d say my favorite is either Truthberry Cobbler or Alban Elfed Day.
Any fun behind the scenes stories you can share with us?
We got to work with some goats for reasons you’ll find out next season! Many things went wrong due to these goats. We could never get them to go where we needed in the scene, they kept trying to eat the set, and kept ramming into Joel (Baldric) and I. The entire set couldn’t breathe we were laughing so hard.
Many kids go through anxiety; how do you personally cope with your anxiety? Does it affect your career at all?
It’s not that it affects my career as much as my career heightens its effect on me. I have a very anxiety inducing job. Whether it’s waiting to hear on a role or just worrying if I’ll ever get another one there are a lot of pressures in acting that make it hard on my mental health. I cope by doing things that make me happy. I love nature so I try and regularly go on hikes. I meditate, I write, I do things that I enjoy and when I have a panic attack or just feel particularly pressured; I try and excuse myself from whatever environment I’m in and I breathe. I think about people I love and every time they’ve ever smiled at me. And sometimes I can’t do it alone, so I reach out to a friend or family member for support. It’s an ongoing battle that never really ends. It’s a constant inner struggle with yourself but I think the main way I get through it is I constantly remind myself, no matter how bad it gets, it CAN and WILL always get better. When bad things are happening to you mentally it’s very easy to forget there was ever any good, you just have to remind yourself every day of the good and power through the bad.
Do you have any favorite Dungeons and Dragons modules?
I’m a very casual player so forgive my lack of knowledge on the terminology, but I just join whatever campaign will let me in. Though, I will now start doing more research to learn.
Tell us a bit about working on your first fiction novel?
It’s been a dream being able to put words that have been in my head for years onto a page for anyone to read. The tricky part is getting it to translate. I usually write high concept stuff that deals in philosophy and fantasy. I see everything so clearly, but my job as a writer isn’t to admire the picture in my head, but to paint it so everyone can see. I usually take one or two days out of my week to work on my books. I wake up and go to my favorite breakfast restaurant, then to a coffee shop next door and I write there until they close. I can’t wait for the world to be able to peer into my mind, and I hope they enjoy the stories I create.
How did it feel to get picked up for season 4 already?
We got picked up for season 3 and 4 at the same time and filmed them the same. Everyone was thrilled with the news when we heard. We were excited to get back to work on a show we love so much.
Have you watched All-Round Champion on BYUtv?
It’s a pretty interesting show. Those kids are so talented to be able to take on any of those physically challenging feats. I can’t even get the mail without tripping and face planting.
Tell everyone why they should be tuning in to watch Dwight in Shining Armor?
It’s a great family show with heart, action, comedy, and cool characters and concepts. I don’t think there’s been a show that appeals to this many ages in a long time. You can watch with the whole family and laugh your butt off, you can quote lines with your loved ones, and I think Gretta and Dwight are great role models to look up to.
