We get to talk to Valeria Jauregui at BSCKids!
Valeria is making her mark on the small screen with her large role on the hit FOX drama. When the elected sheriff dies, Bill Hollister (Stephen Dorff), a lawman only interested in justice, gets thrown into the job as acting sheriff. Valeria stars as Bill’s daughter, Maggie.
BSCKids: Tell us about your role on Deputy? How did you get the role?
Valeria Jauregui: I play Maggie Hollister, who is Bill and Paula’s daughter. She is sweet, sarcastic, stubborn, and silly! I think Maggie represents that at the end of the day the Sheriff has a family at home who just wants him to come home safe every night. I booked Deputy in quite a funny way actually. I recorded the audition with my oldest brother who, of all of us in the family, is the least talented when it comes to showing the slightest bit of emotion. His dead voice pitch and mannerisms were what lead to me transmitting exaggerated sarcasm to try to push his reader skills. I guess they liked it and I got the role.
How do you get prepared to do your scenes?
It depends on what type of scene. If it’s a fun family scene, then I’ll make sure to get my energy up beforehand. If it’s an emotional scene, I try not to be in my head too much, so I stay vigilant and prepare previously as well. I always make sure I do all of my script analysis and character work before going to set. So that when I’m onset, I can focus on being attentive and dive into the character knowing that I prepared beforehand.
Tell us about your time on La Voz Kids USA and how you earned a spot in the finals.
Still, to this day, it was one of the best experiences of my life. I spent most of my 7th grade year in Orlando filming the show. The experience taught me lots of things that I still carry with me today. Vocal discipline, like not drinking milk or eating anything dairy that would cause mucus, to keep a clean throat, getting enough rest every night to be able to wake up to our 5:00 AM vocal training classes. I learned essential things like breath control, choreography, and how to handle a mic. I still keep in contact with my closest friends from the competition. I have dear memories from it that I will never forget.
Outside of acting, what other hobbies do you have?
I love playing and learning instruments. Painting, songwriting, singing, reading, dancing. I love doing all sorts of things to keep myself entertained.
Do you find modeling or acting to be harder and why?
Well, I have grown up acting and have minimal modeling experience. I know that they both have their traits that some people will find more accessible and some harder, but for me, because I am not too familiarized with the rules of modeling, I find it harder. I also love acting so much that whenever it gets hard, I enjoy it even more. I think with modeling; I would freak out if I didn’t know something.
Who do you feel has taught you the most in your acting career?
A lot of people have impacted my career. One is my acting teacher in Texas, Cathryn Sullivan. She’s a fantastic teacher. I took a lot of workshops and classes in L.A. as well a few years ago, and of course, I learned something new with each class. And actors and actresses I have worked with in the past have taught me a lot as well. I try to learn as much as I can wherever I am.
Who are some of your favorite people on Instagram?
Sabrina Carpenter
Lennon Stella
Cory Richards
Olivia Rodrigo
Tell us something people would be surprised to learn about you.
My first language is Spanish!
If you could guest star on any show, past or present which one would it be and why?
Probably Friends just to get to meet the cast because that is my favorite TV show ever.
Is there anything else you have coming up in the future that you can tell us about?
I am currently working on my music, auditioning, continuing to train, and looking forward to whatever this crazy life has planned for me in the future!
Why should everyone tune into watch Deputy?
It’s got everything. You want cops? We got ‘em. Horses? Got ‘em. Strong female leads? Got ‘em. Fight scenes? We have that too. LGBT history being made on TV? Yeah, we did that. Keep naming it, Deputy is unlike anything, and it has a unique style to it. It’s heartfelt, yet action-packed. The cast is terrific. Just watch it!
