Disney Plus Cartoons You May Have Missed And What We Are Waiting On – Ranked

Disney Plus Cartoons You May Have Missed And What We Are Waiting On – Ranked

January 3, 2020

Disney Plus has brought back some great cartoons of yore and also has some new cartoons from the Disney Channel as well. While this first started out as a list of just the old cartoons that you might have missed because of when you happened to have been born, or maybe you were too busy playing sports we decided to talk about some new cartoons as well even if we did not put them on the list. That means that we took to Disney Plus Animated Series tab and went through the list to come up with our personal top 13 animated series currently on (Disney Plus January 2020). Not to worry we will have a section with what we are looking forward to coming to Disney Plus or series that have not yet been slated to the streaming app. We even went back and watched some episodes again to make sure they held up and that definitely made our list choices move around a bit.

New series like Amphibia, Big City Greens, Tangled: The Series and Milo Murphy’s Law that have not finished their runs are not on the list, but that does not mean that they are not trending towards greatness. Amphibia and Big City Greens are some of our favorite shows currently airing. Also, for some reason we are not huge Star Wars animated fans so they did not make the list, we are sure people are going to have some issues with that. Same with Marvel with only the old Spider Man And His Amazing Friends making the list.

Here we go with the list of what is currently on the Disney Plus Series section for Animation with a quick blurb and ranked in order, so go grab your kids or just watch by yourself.

The Top 13 currently airing

#13 – The Emperors New School – It is funny enough to land on the list, that is all.

#12 – Teachers Pet – A dog dresses up as a boy to go to school, wasn’t as well-received as it could have been

#11 – Goof Troop – This is an interesting one as it uses classic Disney characters, Goofy and Pete and their families, but it really makes the list because it was the start that enabled A Goofy Movie to happen. Plus Pete’s family was pretty cool.

#10 – Rescue Rangers – Gadget was the reason this show was so much fun to watch. She was able to use all sorts of items to make the coolest things.

#9 – TaleSpin – It had a Raiders Of The Lost Ark vibe going with it as well as the comedy between Baloo and Rebecca. Overall though, Kit Cloudkicker really makes the series.

#8 – Gargoyles – We may have not liked this as much as some people, but the gritty feel for the cartoon was something new for Disney and for the kids of the time. The comic relief of Broadway and the team makes it feel more fun at times though. It felt like it had an overall story and that is what makes it, along with the gritty feel, stand out.

#7 – Darkwing Duck – The show that was not a spin off, still had Launchpad as a character. While the reboot has blurred all sorts of lines, the original was so much fun with Gosalyn Mallard and the creative villains.

#6 – Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends – This was my first take at animated comic book characters and because of that it makes the list. This was a fun trio of characters and we even got the original for this series Firestar character. Loved how Iceman was portrayed in this show.

#5 – Kim Possible – Considering that we still say “What’s the Sitch” and there was a game at Disney World for the show, it really did a lot of things for the time. Think about all of the things it did to more cartoons forward even if we did not know it at the time. Nothing felt forced and everyone had their place, you go Shego, we could probably write tons of articles on this show. While it may not have been our favorite, it really is a must watch. It was tough to not move it higher on the list, but we do have our favorites.

#4 – DuckTales – It was so good it required its own reboot. To us the original feels more about treasure hunting than the reboot and we love that. Plus Flintheart is more of a real rival to Scrooge rather than just comic relief.

#3 – Disney’s Adventures of the Gummi Bears – A very classic setting, with characters that have such distinct personalities. Loved the secret aspect of the Gummi Bears as well as the humans that they interact with. The relationship between Cavin and Princess Calla is wholesome and what really moves this up this high is the later episodes. When they start to interact with other Gummi Bear tribe, the Barbics this becomes an awesome show. It is also referenced in the DuckTales reboot.

#2 – Recess – We threw this on the television and called our daughter in. As she said, at first it was just so-so, but after the second episode she really connected with the characters. Now it is one of her favorite shows. It is a fun look at 4th grade and the series has some follow up specials and movies as well.

#1 – Gravity Falls – There is nothing that really needs to be said about Gravity Falls, it is the best Disney cartoon and holds its own against any cartoon created. The fact that it had a large arching story that played out well in the end puts it up there in instant classic status. We have seen it from start to finish at least 10 times.

Now for shows we are waiting on in no particular order, some of which could easily take the number 2 or 3 spot on our above list (some have been announced to be coming to Disney Plus already):

Aladdin – Really enjoyed the cast of characters and Iago voiced by Gilbert Gottfried is what really made the show stand out. It might not be as high on this part of the list as the others, but we really enjoyed watching it when it was out.

Pepper Ann – If there is a show that we are excited to sit down and share with our daughter it is Pepper Ann, she was a great character and her friends Milo and Nicky were also well done, and you can’t forget about Pepper Ann’s sister Moose. The students at Hazelnut Middle School felt real, so it really sucked you in. Since this show was not released on DVD it is tough to find it to watch so we are looking forward to it coming to Disney Plus. We have to go off of what we remember about Pepper Ann and her emotions that come out in fantasy form.

The Weekenders – Problem on Friday, worsening of said problem on Saturday, and solved by Sunday. This show was about all the fun things that happened over the weekend and we loved Tino, Tish, Carver, and Lor.

Fillmore! – Cornelius Fillmore and Ingrid Third were on the school’s safety patrol and the show ran like a kids animated version of cop television shows, well a parody of those shows at least.

American Dragon: Jake Long – Jake Long has magic dragon powers that his grandfather is helping him to understand. The star character though is Fu Dog who an ancient dog that provides comedy as well as teaching. The villain of the series, the Huntsman, is well done and the twist of Rose really makes it a show that holds your interest.

The 7D – This could have been a classic if it had stuck around a bit longer. It had a hilarious cast of characters with great voice work and a set of villains that kept your interest. It could also be watched and enjoyed by all ages. What really made us laugh are the names of the characters like Queen Delightful, Lord Starchbottom, Sir Yipsalot, etc… Again they had great voice actors with Kelly Osbourne as Hildy Gloom who we loved, as well as many other great actors. The Bing Bong Bell rings when the queen needs the help of the 7D, and we love saying “Bing Bong Bell” and the artwork was really well done.

Have three kids, two boys (18 and 16) and a girl (12). I had a grandfather that watched cartoons and read the Sunday funnies until he passed. I feel the same way and continue to watch the Disney channel in my 40s. Check out our BSCKids youtube channel Current favorite show is Amphibia.
