With Raising Dion right around the corner in October, we get the opportunity to speak to another cast member in Gavin Munn. You can read a little bit about Gavin below and then stay tuned for a fun interview on the show and his career.
Gavin is currently co-staring on HBO’s, The Righteous Gemstones and starring in NETFLIX’s much anticipated series Raising Dion by Michael B. Jordan. Gavin plays, Jonathan King, a hard-hitting bully at first, but turns out to have a “special” relationship with Ja-Siah’s character Dion and then is developed throughout the season (tune in to watch) On top of Raising Dion, you can catch Gavin in the HBO hit series, “The Righteous Gemstones” a Danny McBride series starring not only Gavin, but John Goodman, Adam Devine, Edi Patterson and many others.
BSCKids: Tell us about the character you play on Raising Dion and how did you land the role?
Gavin Munn: I play the role as Jonathan, which is one of the bully skateboarding kids, who is considered part of the “cool crew” at Dion’s school. My character is not very nice to Dion, at first, can’t give too many spoilers. lol.
I actually had to audition in Atlanta, one of the requirements was to show my skateboarding skills along with my acting skills, that was fun! There were several hundred actors who auditioned, I was very lucky to get this role. I actually auditioned and got a call back for another kid in the show, and the casting director asked me to audition for Jonathan, and I BOOKED IT!
Do you feel like you have anything in common with the character you play on the show?
I don’t actually, I play as a bully in the show and in my “real life,” because of how I was brought up and who I am, including my size haha… I’m def not the “bullying” type, but this was a great role to play, I learned a lot from this character.

Tell us something people would be surprised to learn about you?
Extreme sports is one of my passions, I skateboard, ride dirt bike motorcycles and love to snowboard! You can catch me playing sports when I’m off and just hanging out with my family. We love to travel together, the hotel life! People are also surprised that I don’t like pizza or mac and cheese. Weird huh?

What is your favorite original Netflix series of all time besides your own upcoming show.
No question, Stranger Things!
Are there any funny behind scenes stories while filming Raising Dion?
There are several funny BTS in Raising Dion, too many to count. I really enjoyed trying to do my own stunts and even got bruised up from one. It was great! It got pretty physical going up against a super power kid. HAHA! Because of all of the special effects, green screens and CGI’s, doing a superhero movie was very educational, interesting and amazing! I became good friends with all of the other kid actors and we all remain great friends to this day. We would dance and entertain everyone between takes. We worked on Halloween and thought we weren’t going to get to trick or treat but they set up an amazing night for us. We got to dress up and trick or treat at Screen Gems Studios after we wrapped for the day. It was epic!! We are all hoping that we can reunite in a second season or another show together.
How do you feel that Raising Dion is different from other super hero shows?
Good question, that’s a tricky one. It’s definitely different but I don’t want to spoil anything for everyone. It has a lot of exciting surprises.

If you could have one super power which one would it be and why?
Probably to teleport, I hate waiting in lines of any kind, I guess I’m impatient. Lol.
In 10 words or less why should everyone tune in to watch Raising Dion?
Super hero kid! It will make you cry and laugh and you won’t want to stop watching until the end. And then you’ll be sad it’s over. Haha a little more than 10 words, but I don’t count every word, haha

Tell us a bit about your role on The Righteous Gemstones.
I’m Jessie Gemstone’s youngest son, Abraham Gemstone. I have two older brothers Gideon, and Pontius, who both have issues with our Dad, Jessie. I’m the sweet one of the bunch, quiet and easy to manage, (so far). I tend to stay in between the lines unlike both my older brothers.
Thanks to Gavin Munn for taking the time out of his schedule to speak with us Raising Dion.
