You may know Lexy Kolker from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. where she plays 7 Year Old Robin Hinton, but you will be seeing more of her in the new movie Freaks with Emile Hirsch where she plays the role of Chloë. We love the fact that Lexy enjoyed our questions and make sure to check out the interview below. For all the Star Wars and Disney fans her Star Wars commercial for Galaxy’s Edge is also running.
BSCKids: Lexy tell us a bit about your character in Freaks and if you share any similar traits with the character.
Lexy Kolker: I play a 7 year old girl named Chloe. She has never been outside because her dad tells her that she goes outside, the bad people will kill her. She is very strong willed and curious and brave. I think I am a lot like Chloe because my parents always tell me I am very stubborn and fearless. I love an adventure like her and I would do anything for my family like her as well.
The movie looks darker than a lot of other superhero movies, where there any times you got a little scared during the filming of the movie?
I don’t know if I was ever scared because Adam and Zach made sure I always felt very safe but there was definitely moments where that felt very intense and real. There is a scene with Emile Hirsh where we yell at each other and it got so intense that I burst into tears for real. I was feeling so many emotions but then, Adam and Zach cut immediately and we let that scene be for the day. Emile then came and talked to me, and told me it was great to feel emotions that deeply as an actor because it will make the audience feel those feelings too. So I felt better. We took up that scene again a few weeks later and it didn’t seem as threatening and I think it came out amazing in the film, so it was worth it.

Talk to us about any fun behind the scenes stories you had about filming? How was it working with Emile Hirsch?
Well, my favorite day on set was my 8th birthday. It was full of surprises and so special. When I came on set in the morning, Adam and Zach were having a “meeting” with the whole cast and crew and asked me to be quiet as I was pulling in. so I tip toed to my trailer and then they all yelled “happy birthday” and started singing to me. Then, I opened my trailer and it was all decorated with balloons and streamers and bursting with gifts from everyone. They also got me a cake and even a real ice cream truck so I could serve ice cream to everyone. It was so special, I will never forget my 8th birthday.
Working with Emile was incredible. I think he really elevated my acting and taught me so so much. He showed me so many ways to do a scene and say a line and we would get very creative in doing the scene multiple ways so that they would have a lot of choices in editing. I never knew you were supposed to do that, so I loved working with Emile and having him push me to be better every day.
I would like to introduce you to an amazing young star who is the lead in the upcoming genre-bending psychological thriller, Freaks. Lexy Kolker, who you may have recognized from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, plays Chloë. A young girl who has been locked up in a boarded shut home by her father (Emile Hirsch) who claims the government is out to get them. Chloë escapes the house and finds a man who owns an ice cream truck. The owner tells her that her father is not to be trusted, because he is a mutated freak that bleeds through his eyeballs. Lexy takes on a superhero role by not only saving her father, but discovering her mother has been kidnapped by the government because she is also a freak.

How do you get ready for your scenes while filming and what do you feel like you learned while filming this movie that will help you in your career going forward?
Actually, Adam and Zach only told me to read the scenes a few times but not to learn my lines 100%. So when I came to set, I had a general idea and understanding of the scene but there was a lot of freedom on what to say. They kept telling me to use my own words and just react to what was happening, so actually there wasn’t a lot of “getting ready” other than to make sure I was very present in the moment and ready to have a conversation with my scene partner. I learned so much about improve and about being in the moment and reacting to my partner instead of “acting” a certain way or “acting” a certain emotion. I think it made all the difference and will definitely be that way going forward.
What is one show that you would love to guest star on and why?
I would love to guest star on my sister’s show Sydney to the Max because I have always wanted to act with her. I also would love to guest star on This is Us, or 911 or Stranger Things or Riverdale for sure. They are my favorite shows so would be a dream come true to be able to be on any of these.
Tell us something people would be surprised to know about you?
I think people would be surprised to hear I have 3 older sisters. Most people know about my sister Ava, but I also have 2 older sisters, Kayla and Jade. Otherwise, I am a pretty open book.
What do you have coming up in the future that you can talk to us about?
Well, my Star Wars commercial for Galaxy’s Edge is currently running and I have a couple of things in the works, but nothing ready to talk about yet, so stay tuned.

How do you balance your career with your personal life and is it hard keeping it private?
My family tries to have family time as often as we can and disconnect and just have fun either alone or with our friends. So it’s been totally fine, but I guess you have to be ready for your life to be public and so far, I don’t mind it.
