With Toy Story 4 killing it at the box office this summer, Disney-Pixar used the PR to announced their next big hit: Soul.
Soul is already scheduled to hit theaters on June 19, 2020 – a date the studio had been holding for an untitled Pixar movie – which we now know is this new release. Soul joins another original Pixar movie releasing in 2020 titled, Onward, which hits theaters on March 6.
Directed by two-time Oscar winner Pete Docter (Up, Inside Out), the film takes place between New York City and the cosmic realms. Ever wonder where your passion, your dreams and your interests come from? What is it that makes you … you?” Dana Murray, an Oscar nominee for her animated short film Lou, is producing.
The tagline so far doesn’t give us much other than it takes place in New York City and the plot is cosmic. But the art we have so far has some sun themes and a possible play on words given that Sol/Soul can mean the sun itself. As one commenter said on another article: “Pixar didn’t pick to release a movie called Soul set in NYC on Juneteenth as a coincidence” so I am guessing we can definitely expect some soul music to be involved (or at least I am hoping this is the direction it is going!!)
More details should be coming soon as we are now less than a year away from release date!
