As the premiere of “Making It” on NBC on July 31st draws nearer, we have our last interview from the contestants. Joanna Gick is co-owner of a design group who has been featured for her projects in many different magazines and media. We got a chance to learn more about Joanna and how she enjoyed her time on the “Making It” as well as some of the cool things about the show.
BSCKids: How did you get on to the show and how did you start crafting?
Joanna Gick: On a whim one night I applied online for the show, it was a shot in the dark but they contacted me!
I have been crafting since I was a little girl. My mom would take me to the craft store and let me pick out something to take home to make. I loved to add some new item to my collection of baubles and fabric.
BSCKids: Who was your favorite judge and why?
Joanna Gick: Gosh, this is a tough one, they were both so great. I loved the silly whit of Simon and the attention to detail that Dayna has.
Eight Makers will vie for the title of “Master Maker” and a $100,000 grand prize on NBC’s “Making It,” which premieres Tuesday, July 31 at 10 p.m. ET/PT.
BSCKids: Not on the show, but tell us about a crafting project that just didn’t turn out the way you thought.
Joanna Gick: Crafting is really trail and error. Years and years of mistakes are what make you get better at your craft. I try to anticipate potential problems. One time I created a strawberry fairy house for my daughter out of clay and I was going to cast it, that didn’t turn out quite how I wanted. The cast got stuck to my clay figure I spent too many hours sculpting.
BSCKids: Were there any fun behind the scenes things that happened that you can share with us?
Joanna Gick: One day Amy’s sons were on set with us. Amber and I helped make them Ninja masks and that was pretty fun!
BSCKids: Why should everyone tune in and watch the show?
Joanna Gick: The best thing about the show is that it is celebrating makers and bringing light to these people that love to make things with their hands. This is something that really hasn’t been done before. I think there is a little part in all of us, that feels accomplished when you make something with your hands.
