We were lucky enough to get to read a copy of Bad Kitty Camp Daze By Nick Bruel and it did not disappoint as it was a funny story about Katie, whoops I mean Kitty, and how she believes she is a dog after getting bonked on the head. Poor Kitty as she was just trying to sleep and eat some leftovers. Once Kitty starts acting like a dog, Puppy does not know what to do and gets sent to Uncle Murray’s Camp for Stressed-Out Dogs to try and relax. Kitty thinking she is a dog ends up there as well and gets to meet some interesting characters. Uncle Murray’s Fun Facts sections are great and really teach us some interesting things about dogs.
L Cap (Age 7): I liked Bad Kitty Camp Daze because it was funny. Whenever Kitty got hit he either turned into a cat or a dog. My favorite part was when he got bonked. Baby and Puppy ruined Kitty’s surprise. Read other Bab Kitty books, you’ll really like them! When Kitty wants to rest Puppy wants to play, when Puppy wants to rest, Kitty wants to play.
Kitty’s life is really hard. Like really, REALLY hard. All she asks for is twenty-two hours a day to sleep and food to be delivered morning and night. But does she get it? No. And when Puppy and Baby get a little rambunctious during her naptime, Kitty gets bonked on the head and starts to believe she’s . . . a dog.
This new dynamic freaks out Puppy, so he’s sent away to Uncle Murray’s Camp for Stressed-Out Dogs to relax with other canine campers. But guess who sneaks along? Still believing she’s a dog, Kitty fits right in. That is until she and Uncle Murray encounter a bear, and then the feline claws come out. Perfect for any kid with or without camping experience.
One thing to note, while it might not bother some people, we had mixed feelings about the scene with the catnip and the ensuing hallucination that comes from Kitty smelling the catnip. Just make sure to note it and get ready for a discussion as your kids will ask about it. You can also find a great interview we did with Nick Bruel for the site.
