Andi Mack is a great show and you can tune in to watch Peyton Elizabeth Lee star on the show tonight, but before you do that check out our exclusive interview with Peyton. She talks about her role on the show, how Andi Mack is different from other shows and a whole bunch of other questions that we throw her way.
BSCKids: Peyton, tell us a bit about your character on Andi Mack?
Peyton Elizabeth Lee: At the start of the show, Andi is turning 13 and everything seems great, but then something happens and her whole life changes. And so we get to watch Andi adapt to the changes while figuring out her place in the world. The great thing about Andi is that she’s got so many relatable qualities. And in the show, she goes through so many things that all kids growing up experience. It’s great to see a character that you can relate to on TV.
BSCKids: How are you like Andi Mack and how are you different from her?
Peyton: Andi and I are similar in that we both are trying to pave our own paths. We both have our own unique perspectives and that’s what I really love about her. We’re also both pretty creative, but Andi does a lot of really intricate projects that I don’t think I’d have the patience for.
BSCKids: How did you get the role? How did it feel to be cast as the main character of the show?
Peyton: I think it took 7 or 8 auditions to finally land the role. I remember working so hard on the script. Learning lines. Understanding the relationships. And when I booked it, I was so, so excited. It feels incredible to be part of such a groundbreaking and unique project. I feel so incredibly lucky to have the privilege of helping to bring this amazing show to life.
BSCKids: How do you get in character before filming?
Peyton: Because I am so similar to Andi, I don’t really need a lot of preparation for most scenes. But when the script is about more complicated subject matter, I like to put it into terms that I can understand. A situation that I can relate to.
BSCKids: How has your time on set been? How are you and the rest of the cast getting along? Any funny behind the scenes stories to tell us?
Peyton: I have had an unimaginable amount of fun shooting Andi Mack. The cast and I are best friends but really more like family. We provide this unit for each other and I feel incredibly safe around them. We would have these arm wrestling competitions on set that everyone got SUPER competitive over. We had so much fun and did everything together.
BSCKids: This show is something special and a bit different from other shows. Without giving too much away, how is Andi Mack different?
Peyton: Andi Mack is different because it represents real life situations. It celebrates individuality and that the unexpected is what makes life exciting. There are so many characters on TV that kids watch and wish they could look like, or be like them, but Andi Mack provides kids with role models that they look at on an even level, not up to.
BSCKids: Is this show going to be something that can help kids with problems they may face in their life? If so, how?
Peyton: I definitely think that Andi Mack can provide support and help for kids as the face problems in their own lives. I think that the main thing Andi can provide is encouragement and support. Andi is so positive. And with the help and support of her friends and family, she’s able to work through difficult situations to happy conclusions.
BSCKids: Tell us one thing we would be surprised to find out about you?
Peyton: One thing people may not know about me or may be surprised to hear is that I am the only kid in the Andi Mack cast that still attends regular school.
BSCKids: Besides the series that you have worked on, what would you say is your favorite Disney show?
Peyton: My favorite Disney show of all time is Wizards of Waverly Place. My sister and I would set ourselves up in front of the screen and watch for hours.
BSCKids: If you could guest star on any television show (that you haven’t been on before) what would it be?
Peyton: This Is Us is one of my favorite television series and it would be a HUGE honor to work on such a beautiful show.
BSCKids: Do you get recognized when you go out and what would be your favorite story of meeting a fan?
Peyton: Well, the show hasn’t come out yet, so I haven’t had too many encounters with fans, but it is amazing to think that soon people will be seeing Andi Mack and recognizing me as well as the rest of the cast.
BSCKids: What have you playing on your iPod recently and what is your current favorite app?
Peyton: My favorite song right now is Shape of You by Ed Sheeran. My favorite app right now is Wishbone. I love how they have different comparisons and it is interesting to see what is most popular amongst those who vote.
BSCKids: Where can we find you on social media?
Peyton: Instagram: peytonelizabethlee
BSCKids: What advice would you give to kids trying to make it in acting?
Peyton: The one thing I would pass on to any aspiring actors or actresses is that you have to love the work. You can’t try to become an actor because you want the fame or to be on TV, because most of time you aren’t. You have to love the late nights and early mornings and working on scripts. That is the only way you will have a successful and happy acting career.
BSCKids: Why should everyone tune in to watch Andi Mack?
Peyton: Well I think people should watch Andi Mack because it is unique and different from any other show on the air at this time. It showcases positive messages and will spark insightful conversations in families. Everyone will take something different from it and every episode will leave you wanting more.
Special thanks to Peyton Elizabeth Lee for taking the time out of her busy schedule to talk about Andi Mack. Make sure to tune in tonight on Disney Channel to watch!
