His Dark Materials

The much beloved trilogy, His Dark Materials, is returning for a new companion trilogy! According to author Philip Pullman, the massively popular series will be followed up by a new series called The Book of Dust.

His Dark Materials featured three novels titled “The Golden Compass,” “The Subtle Knife,” and “The Amber Spyglass.” The series was published between 1995 and 2000, and has sold more than 17.5 million copies. The trilogy took place in several parallel universes and the coming of age of two children, Lyra Belacqua and Will Parry, as they wander through the different universes.

Pullman said that in The Book of Dust trilogy, Lyra will return as a major character, but in new ways. In an interview with NPR, Pullman explained:

… the first book is set roughly ten years before the action of His Dark Materials. And the second book and subsequent books … are set ten years after it. So in the first one, Lyra is only a baby of about six months. So she’s not able to do very much, but she’s certainly the focus of intense activity on the part of the main protagonists. In the second book she will be twenty years old, she’ll be an adult …

Pullman added,

“It’s not a sequel, and it’s not a prequel, it’s an equal.”

His Dark Materials included different mythos such as witches and armored polar bears, but the trilogy also alluded to ideas from physics, philosophy and theology. The trilogy functions in part as a retelling and inversion of John Milton’s epic Paradise Lost, with Pullman commending humanity for what Milton saw as its most tragic failing, original sin.

Although the series is primarily marketed the series to young adults, Pullman has said he had intended to speak to both older children and adults.

The first book in the series will be published on Oct. 19. It is currently available for preorder on Amazon for $22.99.
