Back in November you might recall something interesting. News that broke about the series creator of the classic Disney Channel series “Lizzie McGuire” was returning to the network. At back then we knew little of Terri Minsky’s new series. With only a short summary of the following;
The story introduces Andi Marcus (Lee) as she’s about to celebrate her 13th birthday. She’s eager to have a little teenage fun and adventure — just a little — but that might never happen because her strict mother is doing everything in her power to keep Andi from turning out like her older sister, Bex. As a teenager, Bex dropped out of school, left home and now, in her late 20s, still doesn’t know what she wants out of life. But when Bex returns home and swears she is ready to get her life together, Andi’s life is turned upside down and she’s left questioning everything she’s ever known.
Back last year the show was only at the first stages of development and writing. Now the series has both been green lit and we now have a title for the series, “Andi Mack.”
Here are the full press released details.
Disney Channel has announced that it has ordered ‘Andi Mack,’ a new series for kids and families created and executive produced by Terri Minsky who also created one of Disney Channel’s defining hit series, ‘Lizzie McGuire.’ The series begins production this fall in Salt Lake City, Utah, with 12-year-old newcomer Peyton Elizabeth Lee starring in the title role. It is scheduled for a 2017 premiere on Disney Channel.
‘Andi Mack,’ a single-camera family series, centers around Andi as she’s about to celebrate her 13th birthday. However, when her capricious older sister Bex returns home with the hope of getting her life together, Andi’s life is turned upside down and she is left questioning everything she’s ever known.
Also starring are Lilan Bowden (‘Zombie Apocalypse’) as Andi’s sister Bex, Lauren Tom (‘The Joy Luck Club,’ ‘Friends’) as Andi’s mother Celia, Joshua Rush (Disney’s ‘The Lion Guard’) as Cyrus and Asher Angel (‘Jolene’) as Jonah Beck.
When I first had penned an article about this. I expressed a lot of my first impressions on the limited information we had. And for the most part my thoughts are still basically like what they were. I am very excited about the new series. Growing-up Lizzie McGuire was one of my favourite live-action series. I always found the relationships and overall depiction of growing-up close to reality. Though I will admit I wish my middle school days where more like Lizzie’s. Yeah, middle school is no walk in the park.
So I naturally do have a lot of excitement and anticipation for the new series. Given just how much has changed since Lizzie McGuire’s days it does feel somewhat needed. Disney seems to be aiming for a more diverse and expansive range of series next year. And a new slice-of-life series was a void that Andi seems to be filling.
The one thing I do find myself wondering is how exactly Bex is. And moreover how that expends to Andi’s life. It is something that I keep finding myself coming back to. I do greatly appreciate the fact that Bex is a twenty-something that still is trying to decide what she wants from life. I know that alone will resonate well with a lot of fans of all ages. It is a universally hard feat that we do not always see featured in any form of fiction all that often.
2017 is getting closer and closer every day, so our wait is not long.
