Who does not love cats, I mean really? They have taken over the internet by storm. And this time the furry felines are headed to Disney XD…well, at least animated ones. Enter “Counterfeit Cat,” nya!
Lately Disney has been acquiring a surprising amount of series. From the once Netflix original series Mako Mermaids to Backstage we are seeing a lot of interesting additions to Disney’s line-ups.
With the exception of feature films, there has actually not been a lot of talk about any type of animation. Odd as Disney’s roots go back to animation. If I am not mistaken one of the more notable things in regards to Disney animated series was Star vs. the Forces of Evil’s second season and the on-going teasing for the upcoming Elena of Avalor.
But it looks like a new series is coming right around the corner. But this time it is making a home on Disney XD.
Check out the finer details from the press release for the new series, “Counterfeit Cat,”
New animated series Counterfeit Cat from Tricon Kids & Family and Wildseed Kids has been picked up by Disney XD in the US.
The comedy comprised of 52 x 11-minute episodes and 11 x two-minute shorts was commissioned by Disney XD EMEA and Teletoon last year. It will bow stateside on June 20 via Disney XD and its multiple platforms.
The series follows the adventures of Max and Gark. While Max is a real cat, Gark is a small blue alien in a purple cat costume. When Gark crashes his spaceship into Max’s laundry room, he forms an unconventional friendship with his newfound feline friend.
Enter any number of cat-related jokes here, because well, it is far and few between when they can be used.
Just at a glance it reminds me of Lilo and Stitch. Blue alien posing as a typical house pet- yeah, can we say aloha? Despite being very reticent of the now iconic series, it does seem interesting. Because it is clearly noted to be a comedy series more likely than not a lot of the plots will be driven around some form of culture shock for Gark and lead to misunderstandings and repercussions.
Just going off the key visual it appears that the owner of Max, and later Gark, is older human woman. Despite not being named it would be hard to image that she would not have some importance in the story. Perhaps even to the point where some of the narrative can be driven by her.
I feel like right now I can only really make speculations, there is just far too little to offer anything past that. It really is anyone’s guess of how this will develop.
Disney has really been gaining more and more momentum with their series and networks. Disney XD is really starting to really form up to be the home of more action and comedic based stories. With next year’s slate of DuckTales, Tangled Ever After and Big Hero 6 it has become clear what they are aiming for. If it was not for Elena of Avalor (yes, I will be talking about that shortly!), I would almost be as bold to say that Disney XD is going back to its roots as the home for animation.
Not that I would object, of course.
Right now, even with as little as we know about a lot of series that are coming, we are now starting to see different styles both in terms of story-telling and even animation being utilized. Things are getting interesting. And you know wherever things go we will covering it.
